Page? THE KEY WEST'CITIZEN Monday, January 26, 1953| NOT FOR GOP. ALONE Eisenhower Is Now “For All The People” -By Senator George Smathers WASHINGTON.- Dwight D. Ei- senhower has been inaugurated as as President of the United States |and now, campaign issues aside, jis the President for all the people and not simply the standard bear- er of the Republican Party. Those of us who are Democrats owe him our support and allegi. ance as citizens, and the vast ma- jority of us will give him the full measure of our support in those things he seeks for the advance- ment of our nation, the betterment the cementing of the bonds of strength which will give us world peace. Along with my colleagues who are about evenly divided as to par- ty allegiance, I observed the in- augural ceremony as an official witness and part of the formal par- ty on January 20. (There are now 48 Republicans, 47 Democrats and 1 Independent in the Senate.) I am sure that most of us in both par- ties feel that President Eisenhow- er, from the moment he touched the nation’s heart, with a display of humble devoutiess by starting his four year term with a person- al prayer, begins his White House : |service in a moving spirit of dedi- cation to a great task. At any rate, we must depend upon President Eisenhower’s lead- ership in this “Time of Tempest” and never stoop to petty party poli- tics. We must seek to serve only the national welfare. For we in the minority party, this is no time for pure negativism and obstructions but a time only for constructive efforts to strength- en our country and establish world peace, and we, as the party of loy- al opposition, must hold the ma- Citizen Staff Photo |Jority party accountable on such MISS MARCH OF DIMES FOR 1953 was chosen at the Elks Club dance Saturday night.
