SOCIETY — PERSONALS — NEWS OF INTEREST TO WOMEN DOROTHY RAYMER, Society Editor Page 4 THE KEY WEST CITIZEN William Greene’s Watercolor Show Is Pleasant And Relaxing In Mood Current exhibit of William Greene’s paintings at the Larry Karns Studio, 220 Duval Street, has attracted a great many visitors, both local and from out-of-town. A few days after Greene’s work ‘was hung, two of the pictures were sold. Greene has been work- ing at his easel in Key West for the past four winters. In the sum- mer time, he is located at Gloucester, Mass. Greene’s amicable nature is re- flected in his work which covers wome of his travels as well as sojourns in Florida and the West Indies. Overseas during World War Il, Greene made sketches of var- fous points in Europe and North Africa. Book Review By Mrs. Willing To Be Given Wed. Mrs. J, Edgar Willing will pre- In local associations, Greene is|sent a book review for the special a member of the Key West Artists group and of the Key West Art and Historical Society. He is a New Yorker by origin and studied at the Yale School of Fine Arts, Art Students League and ‘the New School in New York. Greene is a master of brush de- tails and although there is at fimes an over-play, the general ef- fect is that of alertness to move- ment, to life and light. As another artist observed in Green’s work, “His areas of light are handled with an exactness seldom seen in contemporary water colors,” the way of this is through color de- lineation. ‘‘Windy Day” and “Boat Repirs,” are espceially indicative of this quality. In “Blue Shadows” the exactness is suggested in the pattern of houses in the distance with a fence crossing the front. Distance perspective is one of Greene’s mystic qualities. Tawny yellows and golden greens are used in a view of mountains at “Sidi Bel Abbes, Alegeria,” .and the mystic hint is evident. The larger composition, “Piccola Marina, Isle of Capri,” is almost like a romantic stage setting and also expresses the poetice side of Greene’s execution. In contrast, Greene turns to realism in ‘Goin’ Home,” which depicts a man standing in a small boat as he comes home near the shrimp docks with his fishing gear, including a lobster trap stowed away at the end of the day. The warm rose, mellowed whites and gentle greens in two pictures of scenes from St. Georges streets are pleasant and convey a feeling of relaxation. The two should be used for matched hanging. “Shrimp Nets,” is a. little too | complicated for the average eye. The Scene is presented through criss-cross rigging and nets and although the detail is fine and the composition good it is the one water color in Green’s repertoire which shows too much striving for the unusual. ‘Banana Tree” is aisg puzzling as to selection of title. It seems to this reviewer that the figures pausing for small talk and the coconut trees, are the real focus of attention. In general, Greene’s work is peaceful and resting to the observ- interest group next Wednesday at 10 a, m, at Fort Taylor. She will talk on George Beraard Shaw”’s “Man and Superman.” In addition, Mrs, Willing _ will present some excellent recordings of Charles Lughton’s reading of “Don Juan In Hell,” pointing out their connection with the play. Those who have heard the record- ings have pronounced them as ex- cellent, and a real treat. ‘The book reviews are given every third Wednesday of the month and are sponsored by the Officers’ Wives Club. Chairman of the year is Mrs. L. C. Brinton who noted that this Wednesday’s review is of prime interest and that not only members, but all women interested in the literary and dramatic aspect are invited to attend.
