FOREIGN MISS! IONS TO BE | EMPHASIZED HERE SUN. | During the month of January emphasis will be placed on foreign | -missions in all Presbyterian | churches. The last week of the month will be observed with Self Denial and Prayer. For his subject Sunday morning at 11 o'clock in the First Presbyterian Church, White at Washington Street, the Rev. Mr. Rogers will speak on a familiar text, “The Harvest is Plentiful.” Jesus in the flesh iaced a divid- ed world. The Pharisces, canker- | ed by self-righteous pride, felt that Jesus knew too much about de- mons and accused him of being in league with them. His answer was logical when he said a bad tree cannot bring forth good fruit, and again, a house divided agains it- self cannot, stand. What Jesus saw was a shepherdiess people who were left bleeding as though wolves had been harrowing them. They had no one to protect them and this was a sad commentary on the church and the nation as well. Rome had imposed # heavy tax and the Jewish religion exacted a simi- lar spiritual tax instead of offering solace and strength to a discourag- ed people. This situation aroused the com- passion of Jesus which is vast and deep. Men are brothers and mot ‘cases’ or ‘Unfortunates’ or ‘Disadvantaged.” He was not in- terested in the charity where men give but a smali coin, but in the souls of men as well. He recognized the perversity of the human race and knew that wages and hours could not solve the dilemma. His compassion ap- proached a degree of pain and through his love and concern he pictured an eager and anxious world for the bread of life. Even today we find men eager for the light which will them the abundant life. The vest is truly plentious. Sunday evening the ninth episode in the life of St. Paul at Corinth will be shown following the even- ing prayers at 7:30 p. m. The Sun- day School will meet at 10:45 a. m. at which time there will be class- es for all ages. Miss Martha Morris the organist will play for the Prelude - Noc- turne by Mendelssohn and for the Offertory Finlandia - Sibleius. The anthem by the choir will be “Lift up the Gates of.Praise” by Lan- Is Meeker’s Sun. Topic “God Speaks” will be the ser- mon subject of the Rev. Chas. H. Meeker at the First Congregation. al Church Sunday morning at 11:00. Mrs. Victor Berstrom and Merrill Baker will sing a duet, “Nailed to the Cross” by Tuller. Mrs. W. R. Dean will be at the organ. The Sunday School will convene | at 9:45 a. m. with Joseph Boza in| charge. Beginners to adults will} find classes adapted to each age | group. | The choir under the direction of | Gerald Saunders will sing the num- | ber “The Light of the World” by | Ellis, at the evening service at} 7:30. The minister will discuss the question, “Is Calamity God's Judgement?” using one of the stor- | ies that Jesus told as background material. Mrs. Paul Archer will be at the organ. The annual business meeting of the church will take place on Wed nesday night preceded by a pot | luck supper for family fellowship | at 6:30, in the Fellowship Center. At the business meeting new of ficers are to be elected, reports of all activities for the year will IQE INPAYV OUINE Ta a Confession and following Christ Matthew 16:13-25 BY RALPH ROGERS 3-25 ter to make | oe er, val it - Chesterton has written, “All the empires and kingdoms have failed, because of this in- e herent and continual weakness, that the for Christ {it is indestructible commi of the ie |Pe w ith hi ho oO into the men’s lives and broken hor divided ¢ differenc as one’s and ever-active constant commit- ment. Following Jesus is no less de- manding. Confessing Christ is succeeded by faithful service or all is lost. Jesus began his active ministry by calling together the | disciples. He asked that they fol-| fow him. It is doubtful if they | could fore-see the hectic and try- ing episodes in their future min- istry. Believing in the Gospel as preached by Jesus, and drawn by the purity of his character, they readily cast their lot with him. It was a gruelling and often dis- couraging career but most in- teresting and effective as they gradually absorbed and utilized the spiritual power ever abun- dantly available. While they might have questioned at times the ful implication of the spiri- tual kingdom, and perhaps en- tertained inclinations to desert their leader, by the time of the | crucifixion they had found Jesus’ | life so compelling, the need of a dying world so challenging, that they gladly gave their lives in service and loyalty to the Mes- siah. The follower of Jesus will not find an easy life but it will be most rewarding. The world has many opinions about Jesus. Kr ing this he asked | the disciples, Who do men say that I am?” Having received an answer he then became more spe-} cific and asked, “But who do you | say that I * Having planned | his life leading inevitably to the | cross, Jesus knew he had to leave | behind some one to carry on the | work of the Kingdom and that they should show in every way the greatest personal devotion to him as the Messiah. In- |stead, the Church shall do the at- jtacking and all the forces of evil are helpless against the Church. Jesus did not mean that ours be a defensive Church. The key incident seems to be a touchy question. Jesus said. “I will give unto thee the keys of |the kingdom of heaven.” (vs 19) j “That is, Peter was to be the chief steward of the Kingdom. Pe- ter had no more authority, as a matter of act, than any of the disciples, or any of the other bishops; all of the disciples ‘given equal power, in Matthew 16:19, to ‘bind’ or ‘loose.”” (teach- ers Guide, Frank H. Mead). The same as all the disciples, ‘‘Peter’s decisions regarding the Old Testa- ment law (e. g. in Acts 10:44-48) will be ratified in heaven. Later Christian tradition extended this principle to include the power to forgive or retain sins (188:18; John |20:23) but this was not its original ineaning.” (Interpreters Bible) Having had the confession from Peter, Jesus proceeds to outline the dark prophecy which lay ahead. He feared that the cur- rent concepts of ssiahship would lead men to think of an earthly messiahship. He foresaw suffering awaiting him and so thought it necessary to give his disciples fair warning. We need be warned for too often we think of Jesus as canceling our psy- chological frustrations and fears, the confusion of our national enemies and the providing of an era of material plenty. Wehn Peter began to rebuke Jesus saying ‘God forbid,’ Jesus said, “Get behind me Satan! you are a hindrance (offense, stumbling block or rock in the path). It seems that Peter was meddl- ing with the divine plan. None of us are capable of dealing with the things of God and when we we get hurt. one to follow Jesus he must e than simply confess him, t be willing to take up his Jesus may have been to his own cross, here, if the disciples would have the courage to accept Cal- vary with him. “He who will try to save his life in time of perse- » by denying me shall be 1 immortality - he shall lose life in the next world.
