Larry Karns Wins Place In State Traveling Exhibit Of Paintings By DOROTHY RAYMER Word has been received here from St. Petersburg, Fla., where the Florida Federation of Art con- vention and exhibition was held, that Larry Karns, member of the Key West Artists group, is one of the painters whose work has been chosen for the travel exhibit. Only 19 paintings out of 165 entires were picked for the travel showing and Karns’ entry was the only one selected from Key West entries. His entry is a still life casein, a composition with subtle and bold color combinations of a pitcher of wine, a small sculptured torso statuette, and a picture frame on a striped cloth covering a little table. Writer, photographer and artist, versatile Larry Karns has a cur- rent show now hung at this Duval | Street studio. It consists mostly of | nude studies with fantasy back- grounds full of his own individual symbolism. His style ranges from abstract through realism and even calendar art and involves symbols which are not too obscure for the layman: twisted roots and tree branches, swirling drapes and windblown scarves, rocks and pools of rainwater. He utilizes all media: oil, casein, watercolor, pastel, pen and ink, tempera and these sometimes in combination. A few of the draw- ings and one or two pastels look like presentations in the French publication “L’Ilustration,” es pecially the one of a purple head with orange hair against a char- % For The Family * Radios CLOCK RADIOS, CONSOLE RADIO-PHONO COMBINATIONS TELEVISION SETS 3 ME RCA’ -Motorela-Zenish a ws %* For The House AMANA FREEZERS, the Upright Freezer For Casy Access TAPPAN and GRAND STOVES TO MAKE LIFE EASIER FOR MOM Thor Washers Vacuum Cl Mixers, To: Coffee Mak Smal; App! truese background and the one call- ed “Vanity” which is stylized and shows a long slender feminine hand with tinted fingernails holding up a water lily from which drip the waterplant foilage. The pen and inks have a French tone too, es- |pecially “The Black Wave,” which depicts a statuesque woman sur- rounded by swath of her own long black tresses. | There is a dream-like quality to ‘most of the figures even though they are done with realism. ‘Rain Pools” in tempera remind one of |the old “September Morn” with | misted greens, golds and water- grays. It lacks the freedom and jimagination of his other more vis- ionary studies but catches the eye with the odd pattern of rocks and \the treatment of light. “Reclining Nude” is also a bit ‘00 polished, in fact, the glistening |finish of the darkhued flesh with bronze-gold veneer seems, as one viewer said, “to be simonized.” | In direct contrast is the rough- \textured portrait with thick daubs lines of green and white of a girl with a rose in her hair. Not as smooth, but it’s better art. That Gaelic humor of Karns’ keeps popping up in his subject material. ‘Whistle Bait,” a pic- \ture of a showgirl in the dressing- room of a local bistro rollicks with jit. Nice touch is the reflection of jlight in her dresser mirror and the vista of the nightspot through an open door.’ Show business is also the focus for “Dance Theme” ——_————_———————— On MAZD=FVUD & O=-O>F upmuxmeo |of pink and blue and broken-ridged | which might be a setting for a Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire musi- cal. In fact, Karns has a flare for the theatrical even in work not tangent to the theatre of movies. Note “Petrified Forest,” with the redheaded girl in diaphonous drape. “Symphony” is the best of the abstracts. It’s grand piano with color note scale interpretation of the sweeping rhythms of music. The design is excellent. Use of terra-cotta in a figure |wearing an Oriental turban, a medallion like study in subtle mul- |berry, blue-grays, muted yellows |and greens with white, and a tem- pora head “There Was A Door To Which I Had No Key” are evidence of Persian influence and one of | Karns pet preoccupations. . .Omar Khayyam. \Christmas Party For Boy Scouts /And Cubs Monday Here it is, boys, and this is j Official.
