The long-expected consistory will | bring the death-depleted ranks of the Sacred College to its full strength of 70. Slim, blue-eyed Betta St. John of Los Angeies, who played Liat, the “happy talk” native girl, was married to British actor Peter Grant who played Lieutenant Cable. The ceremony, an Anglo-Ameri- can affair at London’s Caxtop Hall registry office, brought out a host of theatrical people. For Betta, 21, and Peter, 28 it was a happy ending to a romance which began at rehearsals of “South Pacific’ in London more than a year ago. For many months, Betta and the handsome Grgnt played the unhappy lovers amid tropical stage settings. Their love scenes had brought smiles and tears to thous- ands of theater goers. In South Pacific, Grant — the lieutenant — got killed and his native sweetheart was left alone. The radiant Betta, who left the show recently to enter the movies in Hollywood, thought her wedding was a much happier story than her stage romance. “My very best Thanksgiving, too,” she said. Grant, who is still carrying on in South Pacific here, arrived at Caxton Hall well before wedding time and told newsmen he was afraid he was too nervous to sign the register. But,he steadied him- self with. a few puffs on a cigarette and went through the ceremony without flubbing a line. Betta, in a beige faille cocktail dress and tiny embroidered hat studded with pearls, was a picture of composure as she arrived on the scene. “T've brought a ring for Peter,” she said. “It’s made of my grand- father’s old signet ring.” After the ceremony, there was just time for a brief reception, and |Grant had to be off for tonight’s show, “The future—it’s a big, wide guess,” he said. “South Pacific will run quite some time, and then we hope tc have a belated honeymoon | in Jamaica. “Present plans are to live in Cal- ifornia, and I certainly should like te make. some motion pictures there—if they'll have me.” Much of the cast of South Pa- cific was on hand at Caxton Hall, and the coming and going of the bridal pair was accompanied by chattering and showers of confetti. In the street as Betta and Peter drove off into the murk everyone seemed to be kissing everyone else. London police, who always turn up for such events in case there might be a riot, beamed on the lively but orderly proceedings. Smiling paternally and bestowing the blessing of the profession, was W. MacQ:usen Pope, London's the- atrical historian. Among the South Pacifie crowd were Muriel Smith, the “Bloody Mary” of the musical, and Wilbur Evans and Julie Wilson, who play leads in the London production, Billie Worth, star of “Call Me Ma- dam,” was one of the first to em- brace the bride.
