Es- timates of the number of high of- ficials and diplomats who will get the ax range from around 40 to 100 or more. That Secretary Deah Acheson is out, no one disputes. He has planned for months to return to his Washington law practice wheth- er Eisenhower or Gov. Adlai Ste- venson succeeded Truman. The top echelon under Acheson embraces upwards of 20 persons, including an under secretary, deputies, and assistant secretaries. In addition there are men who have been closely identified with Acheson’s policies, such as Philip Jessup, ambassador at large, and policy planning chief Paul Nitze, former Wall ‘Street investment banker.
