Page 4 MARGARET FORESMAN, THE KEY WEST CITIZEN SOCIETY... PERSONALS. .. Society Editor SHOP HOPPING with As this column is being written, , I have just voted for a President of the United States, but 1 don’t know how it is coming out yet. By the time this reaches you, the elections will be ancient history, and everyone will know. But excitement is running high, and a holiday spirit pervades the gir. It was even exciting going shopping this morning. . . here is what I found: : xkw kk Interesting and lovely scenes from the South Seas painted on silk, caught my eye as |} went Into the Ditty Box yesterday. Two 1 saw, were scenes from Guam. Lovely and colorful, tacked to a [ grass mat. The enterprising lady who runs the. Ditty Box has been having a hard time keeping up with the demand for bamboo table mats, so she has devised « beautiful one of abaca straw cloth, stiched nb rafia that is much more at- active and exotic than the bam- so Mrs. Lovell is * ‘There are lots of ways to stuff a@ vegetable, and most of them } are favorites of mine. Now, anyone | who stuffed a. mushroom will} please raise their right hand. It »makes a good hot Sunday Night , or for that matter, a good : eon dish anytime. Peel the. large ones, and leave the little ones as is: There are folks who claim that all the flavor {gin the skins. Be that as it may, the skin on a large mushroom is '® wee bit tough. Cut off all stems, and wash everything. Bake stuffed and plain with the stems, in; a greased pan with a tablespoon of! butter until the mushrooms are: cooked and the filling is done through. Don’t turn the mushrooms. wt Was there ever a woman with soul so dead, she wouldn't thrill right down to her little painted toenails over a gift of black lin- gerie? Now | don't know if 1 have many male readers but Mom can show this to Pop or frame it and prop it against his | @offee cup some morning as a big fat Christmas hint! The loveliest most lavish and daring black lingerie in town is being displayed this week at Mar-Ed. In the window is a gown for the Queen of your heart with matching negligee, a lovely half slip te match, also full slip, pan- ties and bra. Also at Mar-Ed, other lovely lingerie items in the smoochiest colors going. Frothy with pleats and lace, sheer as @ wisp of cloud and soft as an angel's wing. The most popular men in town this Christmas will be the ones @ enough to shop. for lingerie, and Mar-Ed has special salespeople just for youl Are you chicken? x wk T've always . suffered a. slight | twinge of envy for people well, enough known that they would re- | edive mail addressed vaguely or | ih code, like “Lotions of Love” | “There'll, be Good news’ tonig! ete., that always reached it’s des- tination promptly. Well, it’s. hap- | pened! This weekend I received, an oversized gold postcard (it cost | 6c to send it), addressed poetically. | Of course, the name and address | were very plain, but still and all | + «+ det me quote: “Over the rivers, mountains, and | lakes, Carry this card for goodness’ | sakes! | At “Key West Citizen” office, | leave it. . . Tt comes from La Vica Gustafson, that lite cutie who used to have the F s Pins and Bows here reg City, ! da now, and of course fs up to her ears in interesting things. I am a complete louse and Daven't written to her yet, but | efter such an unusual card, rl) surely have to, % ze ae Sf 9 read @ cute story yesterdey about a woman with three faces. Now generality @ weman has @ terrible time with jwet ens, but three. . .weill OF course it turn | ed out that the faces were ali | but she had three changes, him or for an eccasien, Wt wes all done with glosses! The gal is Mrs Gladys Barber and she is associated with Dr. Valdes whose offices are on Du- val Street upstairs and = just across the street from the Beach- comber Jewelers, Gladys also as- sists Dr. Valdes and the other Doctors who are associated with this office: Dr. George Lawson, prominent eye surgeon of Miami and Dr. Jos. Groom, formerly of the Mayo Clinic. xk * Speaking of glasses just reminds me, that during my shop hopping tour yesterday, I got terribly ab- sent minded, and laid my own glasses down and walked away. They are prescription sun glasses and would make anyone else cross eyed if they tried to wear them, so they are only of use to me. They have plastic rims shot with silver and are quite small. Shop -hopping being what it is, I visited among other places, the Ditty Box, Chic, Beacomber, Mar- Ed, Kress. . .at the kitchen wear counter, and the Caroline Shop. So if anyone should find them, and will either notify me at the Citizen Office, or bring them in, I'll go McAvoy one better and offer a reward in money! I'd also. be most» grateful, because without them you know. . .well I just don’t early bird, and like to be that rarity, often ed about but seldom seen, . .the early Christmas shopper. But if you should be around the Caro- line Shop. . .just down Anne St. from Caroline, stop in and look at some of the one-of-a-kind giffe there, made especially for them. ' LE especially admired the hand woven pla mats of natural linen with metalic threads cun- ningly ed inte the border. Some huge ceramic ash trays for your favor n each chair, He'll be delighted and you'll be pleased too. Just for Christmas the Caro- line Shop has -dainty toiletry cases of silk fitted with plastic hotties for your favorite lotions and creams. Hand painted de- corative tiles, straw slippers, and more things than | can possibly mention here. The variety is end- jess, delightful and just right. Remember the. early bird! x * * Believe it or not, a woman wrote the following, but it is alas, too true! “When daughter dresses in half the time it took her mother, the feat is accomplished, not through a-maximum of speed but through a minimum of garments.” xe * Wf you've passed Chic uptown on’ Duval St. recently, you've probably noticed two very smart suit dresses in the window. One is plain narrow grey skirted with a full swing jacket in an odd checked design accented with @ huge button at the collar and another at each side on the In- teresting pocket treatment. The other has a black silk faille skirt and rough ribbed | short sleeved jacket of beige with red accent at the collar. Center- ed in the window is a navy blue | skirt with scalloped pockets and | @ charming white boucle even- ing sweater. F Now these dresses are very very smart, but you'd never guess. . .these are all maternity clothes! The mamma-te-be will be delighted te know she can get lovely smart clothes so rea sonably at Chic. These dresses beer the femous “Lady in Wait- ing” tee. xx Life magazine, among many others, and the newspapers too, have been*most enthusiastic about s living up in Panama /the performance of a group of | dancers from a country that is a/ good neighbor of ours, the island | of Bali. She is reporied to be a; Weauliful Balizese child, so woo- deriul we watch that people go back to see ber again and again The pictures taken of ber in motion bear this out. The Thrift Shop, as you surely = | know by now, is located on the sec. ond floor of the Navy Commissary building, and it is there that the toys will go on sale within the next few days. Meanwhile, what a flurry and scurry the gals in charge of the work are going through. They are painting, making doll clothes, refur- bishing and replacing wigs for the dollies that may have received rough ‘treatment from their for- mer owners—in. short, they are do- ing everything necessary to make the toys so bright and shining that you almost can’t tell they aren't brand spanking new. Sparking this tremendous outlay of energy and-elbow grease. are Mrs. W. H. Truesdell, Mrs. E. A. Barham, Mrs. L. L. Tyndall and all other members of the Fleet Train- jing Group division of the Officers’ Wives’ Club here. If you happen to notice any of the catchy posters around adver- tising the toy drive and sale, they are the work of the Fleet Sonar School, and were done by people who know what to put on a poster to make people look at. it. Sometimes the ladies involved in this project have to call on the menfolks for help in working over some of the mechanical toys, part- icularly the vehicles such as wag- ons, tricycles, bicycles and other items devoted to the swifter pro- pulsion of the younger set on their appointed rounds, The most active person in this field has been Will- iam Carey of the Overseas Cycle Shop, who for the second consec- utive year is devoting his time and tools to this work. When Mr. Carey finishes with a vehicle, the Thrift Shop is proud to display it, and any der the tree on Christmas morn- ing.
