KEY WEST, FLORIDA, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1952 Two Plays At Barn Theater Tonight, 8:30 “The Monkey’s Paw”; “If Men Played Cards As Women Do” Shown By SUSAN McAVOY Workshops of theater groups gen- erally perform before audiences composed only of their own mem- bers and close friends. | That this is a sound policy was | demonstrated last night when the Key West Players Summer Work- shop put on “The Monkey’s Paw” and ,‘If Men Played Cards As Wo- men Do.” Neither production could stand the outside public’s critical view- ing. As one veteran Barn Player said: “They should keep these produc- tions to themselves. They are not ready for the public.” I must reluctantly agree. The better of the two, the George $. Kaufman one actor “If Men Played Cards As Women Do”, found more favor if only because of its brevity. The last of the two plays of the evening, it also had the advantage of brightening our mood as we knew that escape from the Barn was close at hand. Directed by Gertrude Splain the playlet was acted by Jim Witherell, Bob Smith, Edmund Giesbert and Don Pearson. They hammed it up so that we were able to laugh at the feminie foibles they parodied. Laughter was a relief after the laborious, slow-paced production of “The Monkey’s Paw” based on the Breat short story of that name. In its original this is a taut, heart- breaking drama of the danger of having one’s wishes come true. As performed and directed last night its only merit was that it came to an end, if haltingly. Director Edmund Gesbat and the cast OU HY tibtiticg Giestert lumbered through the alleged dra- ma, irritating this member of the audience still further with dialect meant to be Lancestershire, Devon- shire or some such. As the wishing parents, Frand Pennington and Mariel Cox emot- ed hesitantly and without convic- tion. The son, played by Jim With- erell, and the Sergeant-Major by Giesbert were little better. Don Pearson appeared also. I cannot feel that the Barn Play- ers should resent this criticism of their workshop. Having reviewed half a dozen of their finished pro- } ductions in fall, winter, spring, and found them well done and interest- ing, I was shocked that they would risk their good reputation by last night's performance. The teenager will have a hear- ing before Juvenile Court Judge Eva Warner Gibson on Tuesday, since he is under 17. The three boys were arrested by Florida Highway Patrolman Mar- vin J, Wilder on Thursday when he } noticed their peculiar behavior on | Palm avenue near the Seaplane Base. One of the boys was sitting on the hood of the 1949 Ford sedan trying to cross the wires to get the ear started. They were planning to take the car to Boca Chica and strip it of its parts for use in their | own car, Mrs. Isabel Fleming, pro- bation officer said. The Tampa teenager was sitting |, in the 1949 Ford belonging to the three boys. When he saw the uni- | formed highway patrolman he got frightened and jumped into the wa- the young men and took the two older ones to jail where they are being held. The teenager is held in detention pending his hearing Tues- day. Wilder notified the car owner Welch of the discovery of his car which had been missing since Wed- nesday night. The parents of the Tampa boy have been informed of their son’s behavior, Judge Gibson said. Mrs. Fleming and Judge Gibson have been working on his case since he} comes under the Juvenile court.
