Quickness of the search, prob- ably was largely’ responsible for 92 of the tug’s 97 crewmen being saved. Four of the survivors—due at the Sasebo Navy Base, South- .|ern Japan, today—were seriously hurt. The Navy said two crewmen were killed, and three were miss- ing. The 205-foot Sarsi sank in 120 feet of water within 20 minutes after htting the mine three miles off Hungnam — the Korean east coast port from which U.N. forces were evacuated during the first Communist offensive in Decem- ber, 1950. The Navy said the explosion de- stroyed the Sarsi’s communica- tions equipment. But the captains of the destroyer Boyd and mine- sweepers Zeal and Competent be- came concerned when they could not make radio contact with the Sarsi and began an immediate search. - The three ships arrived at the scene of the disaster within 30 minutes, Those killed were identified as Steward Second Class Hampton Curtis Carter and Chief Quarter Master Raymond Shirley Parrish, both of San Diego. : Missing were Radarman _ third Class Robert T. Slattery, Milford, Mass.; Damage Controlman First Class Charles. H. Kunsch Jr., Omaha, Neb., and Yeoman Third Class Hubert N. Demarest, Par- sippany, N. J. One of: the first picked up was the Sarsi’s skipper, Lt. W. M. How- 1m | ard, Norfolk, Va. He helped direct rescue operations and was com- mended by Vice Adm. Joseph J, Clark, commander of the U. 8.
