A flurry of reports that scores of unidentified objects had been! spotted by radar in the Washington} during the past 10 days led | area the Air Force to call a special news conference Tuesday to tell what it knew—or thought—of the saucers. ‘The official Air Force conclusion, announced Tuesday: About one-fifth of the sighting reports are ‘from credible ob- servers, of relatively incredible things—so we keep on being con cerned about them.” Of the onedifth for which there $s no explanation, Maj. Gen. John A. Samford, intelligence director, said: “No pattern has ever been found | that reveals anything remotely Vike a purpose or consistency that @an in any way be associated with | @ny menace te the United States Samford is one of the Air Force's two top experts on saucers. Samford and Ramey announced Ghat since 1947 the Air Force has optical illusions, northern lights, weather balloons, and reflection of lights--even automobile lights. But every effort is being made to identify the mysterious one-fifth. | One new step being planned is use jof a newly developed telescopic camera which can photograph a 150-degree area of sky on one plate. Other specialized, highly sensi tive cameras also will be used. The Air Force experts said Tues- day that some of the reports of flying saucers admittedly have stemmed from the firing of rock- ets, guided missiles and other de fense research work—but not in the Washington area. None of this | work is being done near the capi- jtal, Samford said. Some of the unidentified objects show up distinctly on radar sets. Early Tuesday, for example, the Civil Aeronautics Administration at Washington National Airport re- ported strange blips on its radar sereen—dots which normally would [represent airplanes moving in ihe | almost five hours Other radar units in the area failed to pick up the objects, how jever. No visual sightings were re- ported. An airliner, following radio instructions from the ground radar, flew through one of the objects countering anything. After ihe Plane moved on, the pip reap peared on the radar screen. Tt is not wnusual’ for radar to pick up strange things, Samford said.
