FLORIDA, SS Considering the country as a whole, business is im- proving. The Commerce Department noted a rise for the month of April in this country’s production output, and a still greater rise for the month of May. There is increased activity in government purchases @f goods and services, and most of this rise is in defense spending which is scheduled to keep on rising. In recent months there has also been a rise in consumer spending. Many business men do not agree with the view that business prospects for the period just ‘ahead are good. They point to the fact that prices are weakening as a buyets’ market spreads, that inventories are being reduc- od by about half by industrial firms, and that purchasing by industry is limited to meeting needs for a period of not more than 90 days. “Probably an explanation of this pessimism..comes from *the'imemories of last year. In 1951 after a. buying ly, in the yepr, the trend was. ip et papas cg tas peers. ae epeety iy ee true that the textil: an Tooter industries had a depres- sion, and some hard-goods manufacturers, particularly appliance makers, ran into a slow market. A careful examination of our economy, however, |lose seems to indicate that we are certainly not yet faced with anything like a depression. There are encouraging signs in the textile industry: the sales of cotton gray goods are rising and the shipment of synthetic yarns exceeded pro- duction in April. Retail sales are rising, and although they have not reached the peak of early 1951, they are higher than at any other time in our history. Considering this with the high activity of the construction industry and the rise in government spending, it appears that there is evidence of underlying strength in our national economy.
