EK you Scramble all th adjectives like Plush, lush, lavish. luxurious,+ lascivious, you have the descrip- tion of Roman Emperor Nero’s gargantuan, gigan' Scenic _panorama which bowls viewers into a state of wonder sometimes known as “gawgaw.” There is a plot to the tremen- dous creation which was actual- ly, although only partially, pho-! tographed in Rome; but the plot is’ comparativ-'y simp _ melo- drama. The scene’s the thing in this instance, - ot the play itself. The three-hour long movie was photographed in Technicolor and there’s ever -rimary hue = all the relatéd shades sed in the glittering surr, undings to make; the $6,500,000 slash in cost, the} most expensive cinema ever pro- duced, there are 6° of them in the’ Cir- cus Maximus sequence where scores of Christian martyrs are driven out into the arena to + devoured alive before the sadist- ic Roraan crowds. Anc nu Tar- zans a.cive to rescue them! More brutal realism is added when the Persec ‘tec Christians are tied to crosses and burned as human torches; slaves are whipped without mezcy, and the losing wrestler in a little palace vaude- ville bit, has his neck broken by the winner. A chariot speed de- mon race along the A vpian Way on the rocky .oad to Rome puts hotrod racing tu shame in so jfar as spills and danger is _ n- sidered. In brie (if such a word may. be allowed to sneak in on a re- view of this giant-size movie), the story is about the epic struggle between ideals and fleshpots, be- tween sturdy Roman law and the mad caperings of the Emperor Ne- ro, and between true love and lust. Commander of a trimphant Roman Legion, Marcus, played somewhat purse@-lipped Robert Taylor, de- | sires ‘a Christian maiden who is held as hostage.
