RAY W. BYRNS, Retired Although this column has not appeared for some time, never- theless there has always been the thought of revival — subject of course — to the approval of the Editor. And the revival at this parti- cular time has been brought about by Mrs. Gene Otto’s inter- esting summarized article 2n the “Bo Tree” which appeared in Saturday’s edition of The Key Very timely too at this parti- cular ::ason of the year as all of our maay native and exotic Key West trees are in full leafage, of- fering -3 Mrs. Otto comments “a peaceful refuge from the heat of the sun where one may rest in meditation and listen for the whispered prayers of one’s Pro- tecting Angel”. And may not that whispered praye- be the worthy, worthwhile, restfvl and thankful thoughts which come to us as we raise our heurts in praise and gratitude fo the beauty and the shade afforded by our Island trees. Something our Tourist Friends invariably notice and praise. We owe a great debt of grati- tude to our Key West Garden Club for their untiring work in the plant. = and preservation. of our trees, many of which are only to be found in Key West and in South Florida, Our t ces must be preserved, and we should never permit their remov- al or destruction by reason of any so-called traffic or building growth in Key West. Hurried and unwise city planning, the care-not attitude and sometimes seeming ruthlessness of building constructors and even proyerty owners, may in time, if not checked, remove from our city many of -ur more worthwtile and ancient tree landmarks. Concerted action on the part of all our citizens and in the City Council by the enactment of le- gislation prohibiting the removal or destruction of trees and shrubs without due permission from le- gislated authority will save our trees. Washington, D. C., and Mo- bile, Alabama, two cities of tree life beauty, and many of our Northern and Southern cities have by wise legislation preserv- ed the beauty of.their cities by prohibiting the destruction of tree life. Tourists, (and they are our principal stock in trade), do not drive down to Key West with the idea of finding a modern well-planned and symetrically laid out city. They find that elsewhere. They drive here not} only for the boating, fishing, bathing and all year round out- door life, but also because they have heard that Key West is dif- ferent. ° Fortunately Key West has re- tained that foreign or exotic fla- vor not to be found in many ci- ties of our land. Its hodge podge type of old Conch architecture reminiscent of New England, the old South, and the Bahamas; its several old two-story frame houses with their window's walk atop (and may they never be torn down for modern buildings); its na ow streets and its old Negro town with its distinct West Indies flavor, and our many | flowering and exotic trees offer | something truly different for the average ‘ourist. True, common- place to us, but not to the aver- age visitor. We have our annual flower show which aside from the Little White House has focused the eyes of many outsiders on Key West. And yet we must not for- get that we have with us at all) times a perpetual natural flower | show in the beauty and the shade | ‘Tuesday, Suly @, 108 THE KEY WEST CITIZEN ro He Page? Commies Complain Of POW Deaths. KUNSAN, KOREA (®—The chiet Red armistice negotiator today_ protested that the United Nations Command killed two Communist prisoners of war and wounded eight on Koje Island last week. The protest coincided with an official U. N. announcement that two North Korean POWs were killed and nine wounded on the prison camp island last week in a series of isolated incidents. The complaint was in a letter from North Korean Gen. Nam Il, senior Communist negotiator, to Maj. Gen. William K. Harrison, head of the U. N. truce team, It was delivered by liaison of- ficer to Panmunjom just before the delegations held their fifth succes- sive secret seession on the truce- change. The conference lasted 48 minutes. Brig. Gen. William P. Nuckols, . N. Command spokesman, said the tone of the meeting was “‘ob- ener) The delegates will meet again Wednesday. In the days before the white man came, Kentucky was known by the Indians as “The Dark and Bloody Ground” because of the wars between the Iroquois and Cherokees for its possession. fore the Christian era, sat under a similar tree in India, meditat- ing anc receiving his enlighten- ment. And I would like to add an enlightenment which brought much good to the people of In- dia at that time, and which in later years, revolutionized the thinking and lives of the people of China when introduced in 69 A. D. I like the way C. A. Williams, an authority on the Far East, writes of the Bo or Bodhi Tree and of Buddha’s enlightenment; — ie., “As the founder of Buddh- ism sat and reflected under the spreading boughs peace came to his mind with the conviction that man is tormented by greed for grain, or by sorrow for loss, simply because he is held cap- tive within the narrow limits of self-interest, and that beyond this captivity stretches out a vast expanse of universal life. But life itself never dies, since it persists in the lives of those who have grasped the truth and found the real life in that which is common to all.” May you too, if seated on the white benches which ha been thoughtfull placed on the side- walk ber. ath the spreading trees for those waiting for bus trans- portation, and if so inclined, meditate on these facts, and raise ycur voice silently in grat- itude for the greater enlighten- ment which has come to man- kind since the advent of Buddha — a progress brought to man by the advent of Christianity and thank our common Heavenly Father not only for the shade of the Bodhi Tree, which you and I wish to preserve, but for the fact that in every age ana clime, noble men have arisen bearing words of truth and helping man onward in his battle wit self. And if you do nut care to do this, maybe you will ponder on the thoughtfulness of our Key West forefathers, who with ay eye for beauty and shade brought to this Island City the seeds and the slips of the many exotic shade trees growing in our lots and bordering our streets, and resolve that you too will in your way do your part in saving and perpetuating these trees, Wid iS Tan MHSaS Sf Sa Heian City trees Do we truly appre- ciate them? If so, let us do) everything within our power to} preserve them, just as they are, and just where they are And those of you reading this | column who have not heretofore
