Lombard, third class, USN, will be honor- ably discharged from the Navy June 26 but his art work will con tinue to serve at the U. S. Here he illustrat ed the class book for his company His first ship assignment was the USS Newport News, a heavy crui- ser which operated in the U. S. Atlantic Fleet. Lombard was car- toonist on the ship’s newspaper, “Rapid Fire.” Aboard the USS Cony, his sec ond ship, he designed Thanksgiv ing Cards for the General Mess | and certificates of the Ancient Or- | der of the Deep. He was sent to the U. S. Fleet Sonar School from the ship to take a six-month course. When he returned to his ship in September 1951, the USS Cony with T sent to Korea to operate | k Force 77. Leaving the Cony he was as signed to the Flag Allowance of the Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific Fleet as a staff artist. Gum- pertz, 84-year-old veteran of show business, died Sunday after a long | illness. Gumpertz entered the entertain- | ment world as an acrobat at the age of nine. He rode in the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show, then moved | into the executive end of the busi- ness as manager of a theater cir- cuit in Chicago and New Oreans. He gave Flo Ziegfeld his start | in show business by hiring him to | manage a vaudeville show in 1894. Later, he managed Harry Houdini and built his income in two years from $40 to $3,000 a week. Gumpertz supervised construc- | tion of the Coney Island Dream- land, Brighton Beach in Brooklyn and Long Beach on Long Island {in the early part of the century. He was general manager of Ring- ling Brothers Circus from 1932 to 1937 and for several years starting in 1938 managed the Million Dollar Pier in Atlantie City, The percentage of left handed- ness among normal individuals varies from four to eight percent but is much higher among in- mates of mental institutions.
