LXXII, No. 140 Whitmarsh Appointed {Ensign Lewis As Tempora For New 480 Meters Installed In New Navy Housing The Utility Board of the City Electric System met last evening. L. W. Whitmarsh was appointed as Temporary Chief Engineer of the new electric steam plant. Board members think that it is essential that the future Chief Engineer observe the final phases of construction at the new plant. This will enable him to have a more complete, technical know- ledge of conditions when operations commence -- estimated to be some- time during October. Mr. Whitmarsh has been with the City at its Diesel plant for years. Previous to his present employ- ment, he acquired experience in steam at the Naval Station. Utility Board Members feel that he is qualified for the appointment of Chief Engineer but have made it * “Temporary’ until he has an ap- portunity to demonstrate his ability with the more modern equipment of the new steam plant. Call For Bids It was also decided to issue a eall for bids to furnish eight months supply of Diesel oil 1,850,000 gallons. These will be opened at the next meeting, June 1th. of oil should always be kept on hand. Other Business Most of the other matters hand- were held over for further stu- mitted by Crusoe Insurance Agen- ey. After discussion, Board Mem- bers felt that there was no negli- gence involved but they recom- mended referring the matter for further study. A qustion of the issuance of electrical permits and the inspec- tion of work completed was brought up. The majority present seemed to favor having the City of Key West handle all phases of inspection work as well as the issu- ing of permits. The Electric Com- pany’s responsibility would be in- stallation of meters. No decision was made and the matter was re- ferred to City Manager Dave King for comment, Toward the end of the meeting a report was read showing that two hundred and sixty-five meters have been connected at Dredger’s Key; two hundred and fifteen, at Peary | Court. This leaves several hun-| dred more to be installed at these | Projects. The stock supply of met- ers is sufficient to meet sll de- mands. Hamlin announced his decision at 7:10 p.m. after a dramatic two hour hearing, jam-packed with friends of Willie Stubbs who filled every seat and peered in throygh every window. en Hamlin an- nounced his decision the crowd of 150 or more in the office and on the street broke into cheers. The Navy bride who had made the accusations broke into tears. In the steaming hot office the State, represented by Allan B. Cleare, Jr. and Attorney J. Y. Por- ter representing Stubbs presented their witnesses. Cleare said that though Willie Stubbs is cleared, he, the County Solicitor, does not consider the case closed, and will continue the search for the offending man. Crucial Gold Teeth Hamlin said that the woman was evidently “molested” by someone, but not by Willie Stubbs. Hamlin said a deciding factor was that the bride said nothing to the police about the intruder having gold teeth, until she saw Willie Stubbs on the street. Dramatically J. Y. Porter asked Willie to show his teeth to Justi Hamlin, following ~the brid sworn statement that the man had gold teeth. Willie showed teeth which are not gold, merely edged with gold. Shoes Don’t Fit Another deciding factor was that the blue seude shoes and brown felt hat found on the porch outside the bride’s apartment did not fit Willie Stubbs when he tried them on at the hearing yesterday. A Marjorie Moss who lives in the same house with Stubbs at 5 Hutchinson lane was put on the stand by J. Y. Porter. She testified that Willie Stubbs was in his own bed at 4 a.m. last June 4, the day he was accused of being in the Navy wife's bed. Now tied up at the Gulf Oil Dock, the Motor Vessel “Oregon’ which is operated by that service, has been in this area for several weeks investigating just such a possibi- lity-in the form of the commer- cially valuable Tuna fish. The fishing experts aboard that vessel said that in a short time, fishing in the area surrounding Dry Tortugas, they have caught about six and a half tons of a sper known as “Little Tuna.” In the se-called 15 fathom ar about Rebecca Shoals light they have enjoyed particulariy good luck, they added. The survey, which is being conducted by a group of Fish and Wildlife scientists, has indicated that there fabulous potentiali- ties in the commercial exploita- tion of the Blackfin Tuna, which has been found to exis the Gulf area. To date, they said, no one has been prepared to fish for them. Jack Thompson, of the Thomp- son Enterprises said yesterday that his company has never ser- iously considered going after Tuna, He added that a considerable num- ber of a species known as “False Albacore” have been known to be present in this area. The goal of the exploration at this time, according to the rfe- searchers, is the determination as to whether or not it is commercial feasible to go after Blackfin and Little Tuna on a large scale in the Gulf Area. The long range pur- }pose of the Fish and Wildlife Ser- jvice is to maintain a schedule of | experimental and exploratory fish- | ing and the development of gear to take the fish. Such data is {passed on to the industry so that | they may determine whether or not such a venture is of » profitable na- | ture. | There is at least one company in Beaufgrt, South Carolina now processing the ‘Little Tuna” assur- ing a definite market. Known as |“‘Lightmeat Tuna,” the product must be so labelled to satisfy the requirements of the Pure Food and | Drug Act. Blackfin Tuna is of the premium grade, however. Heretofore, the “Little Tuna” has been considered a game fish jand the anglers say that it can really take a line out.
