Page 12 THE KEY WEST C ITIZEN Monday, May 5, 1952! By DON WHITEHEAD MIAMI (® — The political in fluence of former Sen. Claude Pep- per became the great unknown fac- tor today in the outcome of the Democratic presidential popular ity contest Tuesday between Sen Kefauver of Tennessee and Sen. Russell of Georgia. Pepper — a one-time New Deal and Fair Deal strong man—threw his support to Kefauver late Sun- | day in a last-round move that brought bitter criticism from the Russell camp. Sen. Russell accused Pepper of “working both sides of the street” by-supporting Kefauver in the pref erential primary while backing Russell delegate candidates for the Democratic National Convention The Pepper maneuver came in the closing hours of the Kefauver- Russell campaign when both can didates were moving into Dade (Miami) County to make their fi nal bids for votes. Russell was the favorite in Flor ida’s first presidential preferential | primary in 2 years. But Kefauver backers were hopeful Pepper's support might tip the scales on the side of the coonskin cap - wearing Tennessean. Both candidates scheduled last- minute speaking tours in the Mi- ami area today and they were slated to meet Tonight (9 p. m. | EST) on a television panel A record - smashing vote was predicted Tuesday because of high interest in the presidential race and local contests. The polls will open at 7 a. m. and close at 7 p. m. (EST). Pepper was defeated for re-nom imation to the Senate two years ago by Sen. George Smathers. But Floridians concede he still com mands considerable fluence throughout the state. Although supporting Kefauyer in the popularity contest, Pepper ad- mittedly is backing a block of can didates seeking delegate posts un- der the Russell banner in Florida's | setond primary May 27 political in- | ‘Boy Sets Five ‘Fires; Two Die CHICAGO (P— A high school soph- | omore who police say has con- | fessed setting five fires in which | two persons died — one the boy’s | father — is being held without | charge for an inquest Tuesday. The 15 year old boy, Nelson Letts, said he set fire to his own home Saturday because he wanted to kill his father, Kenton, 49. Russell de- clared: “I now understand some of the confusion in the delegate situa- \tion since former Sen. Pepper told }me he had urged some delegates |to enter as Russell delegates.” | Pepper said he is urging friends to support some Russell delegate, others who are pledged to Ke-| }fauver and “a couple’ who are | | running as independents. He said he wants a Florida del- | egation to the national convention which will not ‘‘bolt” the party in event of a Southern revolt over \ civil rights | Pepper declared if Kefauver wins in Florida, then he can go on to capture the Democratic presiden- tial nomination Russell backers drew comfort from the fact the Georgian drew a crowd of about 5,000 people to a reception for him Sunday in Mi- ami — which is regarded as a Kefauver stronghold Kefauver received last - minute support from the former crime }buster, Rudolph Halley, who is now president of New York City’s City Council Halley came to town to speak for Kefauver. He urged Florida jvoters to support the Tennessean and bring about “a moral revival in government.”’ Halley was chief counsel of the Senate Crime Com- mittee headed by Kefauver.
