New Plan For statements by Secretary of Com- merce Sawyer and former Attor- ney General McGrath over the ‘Newbold Morris case may bring both Sawyer and his former Cab- inet colleague before Congress to explain. Sawyer said Sunday on NBC's Meet the Press televisiun program that he had asked McGrath to in- vestigate surplus ship deals more than six months before McGrath named Morris as cleanup boss. McGrath recently testified be- fore a House judiciary subcommit- | i tee that he knew nothing of Mor- ris’ ship deals when he appointed | i him in February, 1952, as his special assitant in an inquiry inte charges of corruption in govern- ment. Immediately following Sawyer’s assertion Sunday, Rep. Keating (RN, Y.) demanded that Mc- Grath — and later possibly Saw- yer — be called to explain the “peculiar maneuvers” behind the situation. McGrath was not reached im- mediately for comment. Morris de- clined comment. Morris recently was fired by Mc- Grath as cleanup boss. A few hours later President Truman ousted Mc- Grath from his Cabinet job. Sawyer said on the TV program that he wrote McGrath on June 15, 1951, suggesting the Justice De- partment investigate, “from the standpoint of. the criminal viola- tion of statutes, a certain number of transactions, including those dealing with the China Trading Corp. and United Tanker.” Morris’ law firm represented both firms, and he was questioned at length by a Senate committee looking into large profits made in surplus ship deals involving them. Keating said in a statement Sun- day that Sawyer’s remarks bore others had made that, when Mor ris was appointed, several top of- ficials knew he was. in no position because a threat of persecution hung over his own heead, NEVER A.
