Thousands of tourists know that Key West's climate | is the most genial in the United States in winter, but com- paratively few of them are aware that Key West summer temperatures do not range as high as they do in many parts of the country, Tourists should know, and the Key West Chamber of Commerce has arranged to apprise many of them, that because this city is the southernmost in the United States it does not follow that its summer weather is the warm- as ‘est. But Key: West has no land breezes. As we are aware, and as the Chamber of Commerce will endeavor to make thousands of tourists understand, regardless of the point of the eom- pass from which the wind blows it is a sea breeze. And wind from the sea in summer is cooling, as is attested by the hundreds of thousands who crowd the beaches in the Rockaways, Coney Island and Atlantic City on exception- County Commissioner CLARENCE 8. HIGGS ‘Third District oa CHARLES W. WELLS For County Commissioner HARRY HARRIS — The third quarter in our school year has come to a close, As you will remember I got out a letter to the parents at the tlose of the other two quarters telling of the progress of your children. I guess you looked for the letter this quarter along with their re- port cards, but instead I am put- ting it in the paper so that the relatives and friends of the chil- dren will also have an idea what your children are doing. re As you know, we have po My iphs we used in our class the first half of the year to get out an assignment, each . day for each subject. I am sure you could see that this was a great help to the children, We have not used, the hectograph as much this ~|half, but we expect to use it later. We have in our school system a reading specialist, Miss Irene ally warm days. oe ta eee What the Chamber of Comrherce will do for Key West is done reversely by promoters of summer resorts. Civic boosters in those places play them up as affording pleasing conditions for winter residence. Conversely, our aim is to assure tourists that our summer climate is never oppressive, and that the warmth is tempered by winds from the sea. Last summer Key West was visited by more people than during any other time at that season of the year. Many of them said they had expected to find it unusually warm here and were surprised to find it much cooler than in their home towns, Indications are that this coming sum- mer a greater number of tourists will come here than dur- ing the 1951 summer. Business, from a tourist trade view- point,-has fallen off in Key West, as well as in every other place but last Sunday there was a decided upsurge in tour- ist arrivals. The proprietor of a large business house that depends chiefly on tourists for his income said that the number of tourists that dined at his place was remindful of the winter season. What applies to Key West, In a continuance of good economic conditions, is true alse of some of the other Florida Keys, particularly Marathon and Tavernier, where there are no signs of a let-up jp their growth and prosperity. We felt that Mr. O’Bryant and Mr. March were almost cruel to have us do that’ extremely heavy work, but without a doubt, we, as teachers who have taught for several years, know that it is one of the best methods to really know a child’s general knowledge, on all subjects, to be found any- where, We found from these tests the weakness of each child and where he needed help most. | During this quarter we are work- | ing extremely hard on each child’s | weaknesses. I have taught in several coun- ties in the state, and I have never taught a finer group of children. | It is true that we do not have all perfect children, but that is true I tine find that this group has the highest class achievement of any | group I have ever taught.
