Court continued their dispute Monday over dis- posal of cheating cases which earlier led to the court's unani- mous resignation, ‘Nine of the 11 Honor Court mem- bers issued statements objecting to modification of their decisions. Chancellor John Trinkle and Clerk Fred Jones said the court ac- cepted the first group of modifica- tions March 22 but upon receiving the second group felt “we no long- er had the prerogative to enforce our honor code.” President J. Hillis Miller, in a statement after those made by the court members, said viewed with extreme regret the fact that the young men and wom- en of the court have found it nec- essary to take such a sensatoinal means of impressing their dis- pleasure and disappointment. . .” Trinkle and Jones said that Di. Miller had modified penalties of three convicted students to ‘40, 24 and 30 penalty hours.” Forty pen- alty hours would add abou. a year and two-thirds academic work. Dr. Miller said in his statement that of 23 cases appealed to the Disciplinary Committee, 12 were modified and eight affirmed. He said of the other three, “the only ones modified by the president, one had left school and the other two were given penalties of a loss of credits ranging from approxi- mately a year to a year and a half.” More than 100 of 200 students involved in the cheating scandal have been convicted.
