Chapel For All Religious Denominations---Boca Chica Naval Air Station New Chapel At Boca Chica One of the most quirements for facilities at Chica Field, Naval Air Station, Key | West was fulfi: jedic: tion of a new tion to serve all religious denomi- nations The Chapel will stand as a symbol of the hard work and perseverance exercised by Chap- lain Edward O. Riley, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, in the Navy, who re- ported to this station in May 1951 for his first duty in the Navy from the Chaplains’ School at Newport, R.I. Until Father Riley’s effort bore fruit, church services were held in a small space located next door to the tion theater. Father Riley had no objection to the the- ater nor to the library, at the far end of the bu..ding, but he felt that the quality of the services would be considerably improved by relo- cating the place of worship and eli- minating noise and confusion that existed due to its close proxtmity to recreational areas. Neariy all of the work in the modification of what was once a Chief Petty Of- ficers’ Club, was done by volun- teer enlisted labor, therefore this is truly a Chapel for the sailor in every respect. Although Father Riley’s tour of duty at the Naval Air Station, Key West, was short in duration, it was long in effect. In addition to a standing reminder of his presence on the station, he left an outstand- ing impr on on all the men on board the Station and with many of the residents of Key West. A typical example of his attitude was exhibited when he was inform- ed that the Naval Air Station was about to invoke the rule common on board all ships of the Navy, that the smoking lamp would be out (meaning: No smoking by any- pressing re- one on board the station) and there | would be no card playing nor re- creation anywhere on the station during chureh services. Father Ri- le: bryonic sailor and not knowing that you didn’t speak to the Exe- r that way) * at least they have to 1 the Chapel to get to the ion area and maybe they bsorb a littic reiigion in just going by the door.’ and many others, he endeared him- self to the heart of every officer and man aboard, and wheg, his call for volunteer builders went out he | had them by the dozen.
