Frank Roberts, chief clerk in the county assessor’s office, a goodnatured tilt between multi- millionaires whose surveying crews worked feverishly to decide on a route for the connection of this city by rail | with the mainland. Clerk Roberts, who asserts he is still young, though | he is a great-grandfather, pointed out that Henry B | Plant, president of the Plant Steamship Line that connect- | ed Key West with Tampa and Havana, had a corps of en- gineers at work surveying a route for the Atlantic Coast across a 25-mile water gap to Big Pine and then on down to Key West, while Flagler’s engineers were surveying two routes, one down the east coast to Cape Sable and the other, which was adopted, down through the Florida Keys. As Clerk Roberts recalls, Flagler invited Plant to come to Miami to discuss the project of a railroad to Key West. Plant wired Flagler, “Where in the world is Mi- ami?” and Flagler wired back, “Follow the crowd.” timers, may look upon Plant’s wire as purely a joke, be- cause Miami is now so well known, but those messages were exchanged shortly after the Spanish-American War, when Miami, with a resident population of 1,000 or so, was merely a dot on the map. * The survey for the Atlantic Coast Line was just as thorough as the survey for the Florida East Coast Rail- road. The latter bought a right of way through the Key and so did the Atlantic from Big Pine to Key West. Clerk Roberts says, the. Atlantic, through a subsidiary still owns the Big Pine to Key West route, totaling se eral thousand acres. No one knows just how decided a role the friendly rivalry between Plant and Flagler played in the coming of the railroad to Key West, but it may be assumed con- fidently that it stepped-up Flagler’s determination have the work on the project started than earlier he Ae |} to} t Today’s readers of The Citizen, aside from the old- | would have done had Plant not been working earnestly } andidiligently on the proposed: west coast route. Had the multi-millionaires not’ had their friendly | tilt, the probability is that we would celebrate the 40th anniversary of the coming of the railroad to Key West on a date much later than January 22, 1952. <=Inflation is something which should be avoided for tworreasons.
