Capt. C risen Halfway To Haven Today Courageous Captain Is Getting More Confident, Cherry Every Hour By ERNEST AGNEW LONDON \® — Unsinkable C; Kurt Carlsen and the Flying - rprise were halfway to haven y At 8 a. m., (3 a. m. EST) the ‘tug Turmoil and the gale-crippled American freighter she is towing were reported 152 miles from the Cornish port of Falmouth. The tug hoped to make port sometime Wednesday. Carlsen’s heroic stand with his near-sinking vessel—which he re-; used to leave—had started some 300 miles west of the English Coast, where the Flying Enterprise aimose capsized in the worst Atlantie storm in 50 years. The U. S. destroyer Willard Keith, escorting the tug and her charge, reported the little con- 's 8 a. m. position and said ondition of Enterprise unchang- ed.” The message said the weather was cloudy, with a light fog, the sea moderate with westerly swells, and visibility was three to six miles, Heavier weather earlier had forced the tug to take a zig-zag course to ease the strain on the tow. The battered Flying Enerprise today was almost flat on her port side, but still “being towed well,” the Turmoil’s radio operator said in a radio telephone call to the Associated Press. He _ reported vapt. Carlsen “more confident tna, ever” that his battered ship would reach a safe harbor. The wind was rising slightly and there was more of a swell. The Turmoil said she was “swinging from quarter to quarter (varying her course 90 degrees, then back again) because of the change in weather.” The radio operator said if the weather gets worse, the Turmoil's Capt. Dan Parker will abandon Falmouth as his goal and make for any port possible, probably the Scilly I The Turmoil was towing the 6.71l-on Flying Enterprise at an angle of 30 degrees on her star- board bow, using a single steel wire 750 yards lone with a breaking strain of only 65 tons. ‘ That was uke a usuerman trying | to land a heavy salmon on a line meant for small trout. But the Tur- moil has heavy manila housers 20 inches thick reserve if the wire breaks Aboard the Flying Enterprise Capt. Carlsen shared watches with his only companion, Mate Kenneth Dancy of the Turmoil, who jumped from the tug to the freighter early Saturday. While one slept for twa hours, the other watched. Then they swapped. Carlsen is getting more confi dent and more cheery every hour.” the Turmoil told the Associated Press. “‘He’s almost worn out, but oealth is good despite the orae.. Increasing the cheeriness of the dauntless skipper was a broadcast message from his father, Martin, who flew in from Copenhagan with his wife to greet their courageous son when he finally makes land $450 STOLEN FROM (Continued From Page One) never worked for Collette, only his wife had. Other Nations On Issue | By STANLEY SOHNSON | PARIS \P—A split developed to- day between the United States and other prospective sponsors on terms of a counter proposal to last jweek’s Russian resolution for a | high - level meeting of the U. N. ‘Security Council | A special private meeting of countries concerned was called to liron out differences Under the Soviet plan submitted to the U. N. Political Committee last week, the proposed council meeting would be attended by for. eign ministers or chiefs of state ; and would e up the Korean ar. mistice as its first order of busi- ness. The United States wants the Western counter - thrust to state specifically that the meeting would not be called until the council thinks such a high - level meeting would have good chance of success. Some other countries think such a limitation would give Russia the chanee to accuse the West of stal- jling. Today’s meeting was devoted to finding a formula for the new | proposal.
