STEAKS TO BE PLENTIFUL After many months of dire predictions of the avail- ability of Beef and threats from both the meat industry. andthe Office of Price Stabilization, the prospect today is for lowér prices and an abundant Supply of beef ‘in the coming months. The reason for this favorable outlook are several. Neither the O. I. S. nor the meat industry can take full credit. : Actualiy, this is the fourth year in which cattle herds have increased, the latest estimate on cattle population being ninety million. Add to this the fact that there is an abundant supp!y of pork and you have the makings of a decline in mest prices. The supply of pork has already foreed pork price down. The larger cattle herds are, the larger the slaughter is likely to be, it the ratio between feed and cattle prices is favorable. This year that ratio is favorable, and corn is in large supply. Thus nc single factor is responsible for the-bright bee? forecast but a number of. eircums ulbfavorable, provide the basis for such a prediction. . Herds are large, feed supplies large, the feed and beefprices ratio favorable, and other factors also favor- able. Beef being in ample supply, there seems to be noth- ing to prevent adequate supplies of those choice steaks from reaching the market at better prices. To the Amer- ican housewife, this is a long-awaited development. ices, AMERICA’S AMAZING GENEROSITY We doubt if the history of the world affords a spec- tatle comparable with that we have been witnessing for the past few years. ; The United States, physically almost unscarred by war, possessed of enormous natural resources and abound ing in monetary wealth, is sending food, supplies, equip- ment and the necessary implements of defense to help friéndly nations all over the world. There was a time when it was popular for some Eu- ropeans nations to refer w “Uncle Shylock.” It prob- ably too much to expect that, in the future, the appella- tion should be changed, in a number of countries, to “Un- cle Santa Claus.” ‘There’s much in life more important than a money, and one of the things is enough money. little people believe about what aiey especially when it com+s to personal infeFests. ieaibaticse, College students who shed tears over team eventually learn it doesn’t make much difference There are two classes of demagogues: One conscious- ly and selfishly misleads people with personal interests in mind; the other eincerely—out of ignorance _ SLICE OF HAM TEPER VR Sear | OF OURS By BILL GiBB What goes on at Garrison Bight? Unfortunately, I'm fet in a position to answer the questions. | City Manager Dave King is the person who many people hold re- sponsible for the unheard of de mand to install chemical toilets on boats. To date, most of the boat) owners have been unable to dis: cover where, when or how such oilets are built for marine use. They also feel that The City of | Key West is short enough on pol ice manpower so that it can ill-af- | ‘ord to place a man in the Bight area with only one duty “to ride herd on boat owners.”’ I must ad | mit that I agree with them A few of the captains or mates out there might be classified as | ‘tough eggs.’ Their life --akes them | that way.
