Wiison, President of General Motor: Corporation, that sovialistic nations cannot match ‘ihe achievements cf free nations because they destroy indi vidual initiative and its free expression. Certainly, there is :oom to believe that great pro- gress has been made in the United States because ‘“per- sonal ambition «nd initiative’ have led many men to over- come great obstacles. Nevertheless, if one wants io be fair, in connection with the economic history of this coun- try, one must realize that the same forces have led some of our captains of industry to disregard the law of the landif overcoming obstacles. Much of what is now denounced as “socialistic” rep- resents no more thar the necessary legislation of a gov- ernment to resirain the greed and rapacity of a minority of business leaders, who do not know, as Mr. Wilson sug- gests, that with freedom must come responsibility to fam- ily and.community. To definitely set out the rules of economic endeavor is not to repress individuai incentive because there is left opet a wide field for the full exercise of the ingenuity and enetgy of man. The argument that individual responsi-| bility and personal freedom are destroyed by helping men and {women to’ protect themselves against the “individual hazards” of life is nonsense. | Every ‘insuranée policy in force in the United States | today represents an effort to accomplish this purpose. | a Many of the social reforms of this government carry out | the game idea, Certairly, the insurance, whether provided | by government or private enterprise, has the same effect | upop the individual. :The- stereotyped assertion that men must be free | ovetlooks the fact that in the process of civilization the | aveftage mah has steadily Jost the right to do as he pleases.
