The produc- ers—and the public—feel that very often Barry “makes” a pic- ture. He recently has been before the cameras in an important role in Paramount's “Silver City.” Barry’s a native of Dublin and, a graduate of the Abbey theater. The little man with a twinkle. in his blue eyes, and a brogue, has never failed to turn in an excel- lent performance. He seldom repeats a perform- ance and has played a ship's cook, f race track enthusiast, a grape grower, a country doctor, a weal- thy playboy and a police inspect- or. No wonder they call him one of the deans of Hollywood char- acter actors. It was in. 1944 that Barry Fitz- gerald won an academy award as the best supporting player of the year. That was for his portrayal of a priest in “Going My Way.” He’s an easy-going man with the friendliest disposition in the world. He was born in Ireland in 1888. His real name is Shields, and his father was a columnist on the Dublin Evening Telegraph. At school, the “Merchant Tailors’ and Skerrys College, Barry was a better than average student: in languages. And he was a topnotch rugby player. Upon graduation, he entered the Irish civil service. The pay ‘was small. but he had his Satur- days and Sundays off for outings. And it was while he was on one such outing that an incident oc- curred which changed his entire life. Barry struck up a casual ac- quaiptance with another hiker who happened to be a member of the Abbey theater. He invited Barry to come backstage some evening to see a performance Dr. J. A.
