PAGE EIGHT Senate Turns Down House- Approved Bill Declares It Would Nallify Work Of Appropriations Group TALLAHASSEE, _ April 17.-- (#).—A Senate comniittee? .bas turned down a House-approved} bill to have the state operate at its current spending rate -if the legislature fails to pass an ap- Propriations measure. The Senate apprapriations com- mittee defeated the proposal 7 to 3. Senators speaking against the House measure said it would nullify the work of appropria- tions committees in trying to get a balanced and cconomical spend- ing bill. They also said some de- partments, under the bill, would get more money than they did the last time. Several House leaders had de- clared ‘passage of the bill was “good insurance” against the legislature's failure to agree on Kew much to spend. In. other action, Senator, Brack- in of Crestview urged that a stop be put to state employees running ajl over Florida during political campaigns. Brackin said a state employee rode in his county “day and night in the last political campaign.” He added‘“I'm tired of thé state hav- ing-to pay for this.” He made the remarks. at an appropriations committee hegring on a bill to raise travelling expenses for state employees. Meanwhile, Pinellas County Republicans introduce: their reso- ! lution to praise General Mac- Arthur, but w unsuccessful in getting. immediate action on it.
