SIMS, Washington Correspondent Writing From Europe NEUBIBERG, Germany (Via Air Mail)—On the boundary of this little town, southwest of Munich, is located one of two fighter fields the U. S. Air Force, maintains in occupied Germany. Only a few miles away is Fur- stenfeldbruck, where the other field is located. At these two fields fighter pilots are training constantly—day and night. There is no let-up. Commanding the Neubiberg base is Col. John S. Chennault of Waterproof, La. Under Chen- nault, there are three fighter squadrons, constituting a, group. The same organization applies at “Furst”, and was the table of fighter organization at fields in Europe during the aS A hundred miles away are the, Russians. Most predictions give them three or four times as many aircraft, within range, as our Air Force has. This doesn’t bother the Americans. But Neubiberg does have reason to wonder. present their fighter planes are inferior to those our pilots used in Europe in 1945. At “Fursti”, things are .a_ bit) better. Col. Hubert Zempke’s group has jets—our earliest mod- el, the F-80. Of course, this makes relations between the F-47 pilots (Neubiberg) and F-80 pi- lots (Fursti) interesting. Most of them think F-84's will be the replacements. The F-84 is Republic's: jet fighter. The F-80 is Lockheed’s. and the F-86 North |American’s. The F-86 is the lat- est model of the three, and so hopeful were some Neubiberg | personnel that they would replace ; jthe F.47's that pictures of the F-86 were hung and painted on the walls. And in gunnery, of in the wings, the jets are more with the guns in the nose instead aceurate. F-47 pilots admit this.!
