vou. LXX. No. 284 Lewis Orders Three-Day Work Week For Miners) MNGER STRANDED grumbling about meager earnings NEW YORK, Dec. 1.—(#)—The coal strike will end partially on Monday when the miners go back to work for three days a week in the hard and soft coal mines, John L, Lewis reinstated the three-day work week this morn- ing after the coal walkout be- came effective last midnight. The work week ‘will be Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, as it was all summer. Lewis’ strategy is in the form of a comnromise because it keeps the coal miners at work before Christmas. This action reduces the threat of a revolt. among the coal diggers who haye been re- ported in several states to be this year. At the same_ time, Lewis au- thorized separate contracts with each coal company, thus abandon- ing the recent policy of striving for nationwide contracts. Lewis’ policy was approved by’ the United Mine Workers — Policy Committee which has been stand- ing by all week in New York. The committee allowed a truce to expire last midnight without moving to stop a new walkout. Shortly before Lewis made his announcement to partially end the coal walkout, President Tru- man announced he would not step in for at least 48 hours. Lewis first mentioned the pos- sibility of invoking a three-day work week a year ago. He said then that employment in the in- dustry should be stabilized and had folded and mem- bere of the troupe were getting home as best they could. fl ( Green Asks Unions To Fight Back At All Communi De 1 w + A.
