Murrow, the newscaster, was back at the microphone, after his vacation. He -eommences his talk with the familiar, “This Is The News.” THE ORACLE BUBONIC PLAGUE—NO SCARE! ore The illness of. two citizens.of New.Mexico “=, has been diagnosed as the bubonic plague but doctors report that modern drugs have appar- ently achieved a smashing victory over the flea-borne disease. Both patients are improv ing.~ If the above announcement means nothing to the reader, we call attention to the fagtthat this disease has been the dread scourge of the Eastern Hemisphere since the Third Century B. C., where it has become “known as the “Black Death.” It appeared in pak 29 tre he D., where as many as 10,000 in a single day in Constantinople. In the Fourteenth Century, it occurred in other countr- ies of Europe gnd, during a period of twenty years, its victims were estimated to exceed 25,000,000. Epidemics occurred in the Fifteenth and ‘Sixteenth Centuries. China was almost depop- ulated. About this time, typhus also appeared in Europe and the probability exists that the ~ two diseases were confused. In Seventeenth — Century the disease was widely current in =~ 2-Europe. Naples lost 300,000 persons in five ~ months in 16§6 and in 1665 the great plague <= “hit London. with a mortality of 68,000 out of a = S_popilation of 460,000. The point to remember, in connection with this brief summary of the dreaded effects of this scourge of mankind, is. that today a discovery of two cases in the United States arouses no apprehension on the part of the public at large. This is evidence of the pro- gress made in medical care but it also attests the improved standards of living that exist in this country, making a repetition of the great plagues extremely improbable. In fact, only twenty-one canes of the disease have occurred ~~ inJhe United States in the last twenty-five years. — ee ' HEUeTDURG ELE Hil CHARGES AGAINST 1949 SUGAR QUOTAS The Department of Agriculture issu- ed its monthly report on the status of the 1949 augar quotas for the various sugar- producing areas supplying the U,S. market.
