Your assistance contributed to the success of the project. GEORGE A. WARREN, Chairman, Festival Committee. Key West, Fla., Aug. 3, 1949. BOND DRIVE SUCCESS Editor, The Citizen: The Treasury Department just concluded its i949 Oppor- tunity Drive to sell $1,040,000,000 in Series E, U.S. Savings Bonds to individual Americans as paré of its program of spreading own- ership of the securities represent- ing our National debt and to en- courage thrift and prudence as National virtues. While a final tabulation of Na- tional results has not been re- ceived it is known that the ob- jective was exceeded by more than 20 percent. Florida, for its part, was as- signed a quota of $12,180,000 and the final report credits us with total sales of $15,675,654, or 128.- 7 percent of quota, — a percent- age bettered by only four states east of the Mississippi River and by none in the Southeast. I want to express my appre- ciation and that of the staff of the Savings Bonds Division and its Committees for the excellent editorial, publicity and advertis- ing support which newspapers afforded us throughout the drive and which was unquestionably a dominant factor in the eminent success achieved. I hope that we may continue to merit the valued assistance of your news and editorial columns. R. L. MARKHAM, State Director. Tampa, Fla., Aug. 1, 1949.
