MONOGRAPH Geatte Readers: No need to fear war unti) two na- the atom bomb, Right now the Cited States is in possession of At destructive mechanism. THE ORACLE tions inten ATOMIC PROCESS SURPRISING Upon the solid basis of scientific and _ industrial achievements during the war, the United States is making great head- way in atomic development and the pos- cgay of the peacetime use of atomic ‘ generay is nearer than many of the experts =diied to hope for years ago. = _ - During the past four years, there has a substantial gain, with improved nowledge and improved techniques en- 4,500 workers to produce more end better fissionable material in the same period of time as was produced by 95,000 workers a few years ago. We ve probability is that the United * States is in possession of more powerful atomic weapons and a constantly grow- otempatockpile. The progress made also tends to put this country that much shead of other nations. Despite present production of atomic bombc in Russia, or ‘WittWhere, the chances are that the United States will maintain its lead for some yearmte come. GOING UP! cost of Government rose from $3 dollars a year in 1913 to $55 billion in 1918. “EE Of course we Had to spend heavily fofthe last World War. Now that the war is over we have hiked up on spending. The Hoover Commission has issued a report that shows Federal, State and local taxation is doubled and trebled in the in- come brackets. A Cabinet officer, Acheson of the State Department apparently, didn’t like te be exposed and has hastened to accuse Moover with exceeding the powers of the Adwainission. Ex-President Hoover is serv- Government without pay. Congress. the former President to do the job him to go the limit. he staggering increase in the cost of Goverament—and in: taxation—together with the tremendous infiltration of the Federal Government into’ State and local affairs, is spotlighted by the report, which bluntly poses the question how the Ameri- ean type of democracy can be maintained while the Federal bureaucracy provides “the serviee which people increasingly de- mand and which are necessary for the gen- eral welfare.” These paragraphs may not be easy reading, but they are easier to read than to write, } her husband. While housewives and the publi¢ gen- erally take the state of the nation’s econ- omy, from day to day, in its stride, yet gov- ernment and private economists are for- ever trying to determine the outcome of trends. Had economists visited Key West groceries, after their advertisements ap- peared in The Citizen last week, they would have reached the . conclusion that prices for commodities generally in this area were lower than they had been in many a moon, One reason for lower prices for gro- ceries in Key West is because competition in that business is now more acute than during any other time in the history of the city. While the competition is not as decided as it is in Miami, for instance, yet it shows a lusty growth in Key West. Say what one may, yet there is no truer statement than that oldtime adage, ‘ompéetition is the life of trade.” It is the American way of doing business, the way that has made the United States the out- standing business and industrial wonder of the world. As it is inherent in our economy, The Citizen always has opposed the gov- ernment’s meddling in private business, other than to see it is conducted fairly and honestly. Keep government out of busi- ness, and the country will continue its phenominal progress. But to return to the’ groceries in Key West. Though freight or express rates are higher on shipments to this community, yet the prices for foodstuffs here compare favorably with those elsewhere in Florida. Without mentioning the name of any economist, the latest view of “govern- ment and private economists,” outlined in a newspaper story yesterday, said that the recession in the United States is now “checked.” Maybe so, maybe not so, for trends of today not always forecast cor- rectly what will occur in trade a few days or weeks or months from now. Nature in its wisdom must have had a reason for creating the mosquito, but we don’t know what it could be. Perhaps to test the patience of man. “TORNADO SEASON ARRIVES ° Every year, about this time, sporadic, tornadoes sweep through various sec- tions, of the United States, killing hun- dreds of people and devastating property. The bouncing tornado, with its rotary motion, is the most destructive force known to mankind. Fortunately, in many in- stances, its approach is announced by the peculiar funnel-shaped cloud, which, when detected, gives those in its path an op- portunity to escape. . Apparently, tornadoes develop their power in somewhat open country, but they often develop terrific force and wreak their havoc in comparatively thick- ly-settled areas. The first we have seen reported this season hit communities in five states and left a trail of nearly thirty dead. Those who suffer at the hands of this accidental visitation of nature ,receive the sympa- thetic assistance of their fellow-citizens but this, even on a large scale of generosity, cannot make good the full loss or restore life to*the dead. In time, perhaps, men will become smart enough to understand and predict the appearance and course of a tornado but, unfortunately, that time is not yet. So far the intelligence of man has de- vised no way to prevent hurricanes, REPORT ONLY THE BEST BRAWLS What constitutes news? We ask the question after reading about the brawl between a “beauty queen” and her husband, which occurred recently in a New Orleans hotel and got coverage from the news associations. The lady, it seems, was incensed with She waited for him at the of reporters and hotel, in the company protographers, who, we presume, are ex- perts-in the business of passing the news tothe public. Whenthe husband arrived the lady “bit, slapped, scratched and kicked” him, much to the satisfaction, no doubt, of the assembled news-hawks. If the press associations are going in for reporting, over the telegraph wires, such items as worth printing allover the country, they should pick up the better’ and fiercer brawls which occur in the nation by the hundreds every day. Why select the publicity-hunting wife in New Orleans who, despite all her anger, dida’t use a knife, gun, or hatchet? ) THE AMERICAN WAY—COMPETITION The Easter. And they spit upon Him, and took the reed, and smote Him on the head.
