Warren de- clared, his intentions on January 28, 1949 to initiatd legislation in the 1949 session of thé legislature “to outlaw the and other suth organizations.” Citizens’ Committees to sup- port Governor Warren in his stand are now being formed in many Florida Communities to arouse public opinion in support of the Governor and to take such steps as may be necessary to make effective the néeded legis- lation. We hope we may count on the support of your paper. in its edi- tortal point of view as well as coverage of néws events. I’m writing this letter as the chair- man of Citizens’ Committees. now being formed in the State of Florida, , A. word from you on the above suggestion will be appreciated.” A. W: GOTTSCHALL, Chairman. Miami, Fla., February 17, 1949. QUESTIONS ACCURACY Editor, The Citizen: — It would seem that some one should spring to the defense of Key West, after the speeches by Senater Pepper yesterday in Washington, 9s quoted today in the Miami Herald. The Senator has never been no- ted for the use of facts in’ his es, for facts have a ten- « y to cramp a Speaker's style. Mowever, he says that 3650 fam- ities are living in sub-standard housing here, méaning of course slums that ought to be destroyed. The use of a little arithmetic would indicate we are all slum dwellers. At the standard rate of 4% persons per family the total is 16,425. According to most re- ports our normal . population doesn't exceed that by very many. But bear in mind we have a large number of units built and owned by various government- ab authorities;- which of course naturally must be perfect. The conclusion therefore is in- j@atapable, that we .are all slum dwellers. Now, Mr. Editor, I didn't know you were in distress. I didn’t know An my ignorance that I was dwelling under con- ditions that would, induce crim- inal tendencies. I know at least 500 residences that t had admitted! through the year, and would Tike to live in.. It's terrible now..to learn they are nothing but slums. Unfortunately I am only a property owner and tax payer, so my Voice will not be heard. You take it frorn here, Mr. Editor JONATHAN JACKSON, 1012 Southard St. Key West, Fla, Feb. 18, 1949 ae ee eee 5,000 PERSONS (Continued From Page One) washing machine, radios, bicy- cles, electric food mixers, and many other attractive prizes. At 10:45 p. m. the big event of the Carnival, the awarding of a new 1949 Ford automobile, will take place. Tickets for thes awards will be on sale at the Car- nival until just shortly before the raffles are actually held. In addition to the merchandise prizes, there are prizes of two permament waves, a camera which produces minute, and the services of a baby sitter for one month One of the booths which has attracted a great deal of atten- tion is the White Elephant Booth which is being operated by the Naval Station civilians. Most of the merchandise in this booth was donated by Key West mer- chants. Many bargains are to be faund there. The Chairman of the White Elephant Booth, Mrs. C.B. Harvey, has expressed her appreciation for the generous do- nations of the Key West mer- chants. Any merchandise which is left over will be auctioned off before the end of the Carniyal. One of the features of the Car- nival is ‘the Navy dancé orches- tra from the Naval Air Station in Jecksinvillé, Florida which came to Key West especially to play for the Cafnival. This orchestra plays thtomghout the evening and many favorable comments haves been heard on its perform- ance All of the booths and conces- sions at the Navy Chairity Car-} nival are operated by officers, enlisted men and their wives, and civilan employees and their wives. No one is profiting from the Carnival except Charity. Early returns on receipts of the Carnival indicate that proceeds ere up to expectations and it is estimated that proceeds will ex- ceed last year’s $5,000 by 100%. After final accounts are in, all of the money will be divided among the various charitable organiza- thons operating in Key West. pictures in onej{ , The WEATHERMAN | Says:| Key West and Vicinity: Cloudy! with showers today and early to- night; clearing late tonight andy Saturday.
