Airlines Has Instrument Landing System MIAMI, Dec. 24. — National Airlines took a long stride toward “all weather flying” today, with the announcement that the CAA had given National its official ap- proval to employ the long- awaited “Instrument Landing System.” . Flight cancellations because of bad weather. will be almost a thing of the past this winter at most principal points on NAL routes, company officials pre- dicted. “Coupled with our fleet of DC-6's, which fly ‘over the wea- ther’ in the sub-stratosphere, this means virtually ‘all weather f! ing’ for us,” said President G. T. Baker. Instrument Landing System, “ILS” in the jargon of the air world, is the method by which the pilot guides his ship by in- struments to a landing on an airport which may be complete- ly “socked in,” obscured from his vision by smoke, fog, rain, snow or whatever else man or nature might produce. At first, GAA is limiting ILS landings to a 300 feet ceiling— which means the plane must break through the weather shroud and permit the pilot to see the ground at a_ point no lower than 300 feet. Without ILS, the ceiling ' requirement is 500 feet—and_ operators estimate that the reduction to 300 feet will less than half of last winter's record. As_ pilots become more familiar with ILS, and as it proves itself in operation, it expected that the minimum ce! ing will be reduced. The system is designed to permit the pilot to bring his ship-to a position just a few feet above a runway, solely by instruments. Car- ‘bonell told The Citizen that Smathers informed him that the order giving Poinciana residents 90-day notices to vacate will be rescinded. Smathers and John Kenny, Under Secretary of the Navy. had held a conference over the Poinciana Place 90-day moving notice issued last week. It was at this confer- ence that Kenny said the order would be rescinded. No hope was given Smath- ers that the 42 families would not have to seek other living quarters, but only that the moving notice would be ad- vanced to six or 12 months. Smathers also said that there would be positively no evictions. This statement was also made by the Sub- { marine Base authorities. \ Reason for the need for the Poinciana Place quarters is said to be necessary be- cause of the large number of Navy families soon to be stationed in the city.
