If the newsprint shortage will con- tinue much longer, it will become ex- ceedingly difficult to keep our (mast) -heads above water. THE ORACLE. PRICES WILL NOT BE FROZEN . Congress, which has never ceased to “keep in toueh jwith the , great unsolved roblem of price control, ;lends little en- 3 *couragement ito advocates’ of a return ‘to, Sthé practices of the OPA ‘and -théir pro- ««posals for renewed price fixing and ration- teing. J Evidently the buying ‘public was con- verted to the decision that the constant in- ‘screase in wages demanded, and usually : obtained, by the labor unions made it ab- ™solutely necessary for the cost of living to “keep on spiraling with the wage increases. ~Some of the best authorities in Washing- ..ton, including outstanding commentators, “sindicate a tendency to the old-fashioned formula of side-tracking most of the gov- “ernment plans to set business policies. ” This may include freeing the bankers from «restraint against granting credit—so there »;may be more money for American small "business to operate and expand. * . In short, there has been a slow return + towards “normalcy” since the passage of <“the Taft-Haytley labor law, which has ac- qytually been:accepted by hundreds of thou- sands of wage workers who studied the legislation and thought it through. . n “ UNCLE SAM MARCHES ON * Despite all this newspaper conversa- ion about the great increase in goods and = merchandising being shipped to foreign countries under the stimulus of heavy aid * by our government, students who have © been following the question through say = that the export trade is down in autos, «trucks, steel, machinery, cotton, tobacco ‘and even in grains and meats. The author- “ities say that billions of dollars in new aid * will send exports upwards. The good news Pin the reports is that the boom in many industrial lines comes from home buying ~and that it will be helped considerably by “exports. ~ In spite of all the upsets in the affairs » of the world, good old Uncle Sam is found marching steadily along at the ..head of the procession. If you can manage to save your life ~on the highways for a few more weeks ~ you will be all set for the hazards of 1948, “-Rather pessimistic, you think? - a a el Anglo-Saxon civilization May - not-be yperfect but glance around the world for *the last thousand years or so, and see what you find that looks better, churches from lic issues and subjects of local or but it will not publish anonymous “GREAT DAY” Not only children must be stopped in taking the lives of the lower forms of creation, but curbs have.to be put on men md women also. Women, indirectly, came near exter- minating the beautiful White Heron in the Everglades and the Florida Keys, and would haye exterminated them had not the federal government stepped in and outlawed the killing of heron. Women, feathers in their hats, did. not.entertain a passing thought about the loss of' the lives of the birds that supplied the feathers. The .women were concerned. only. in the thought that. wearing-the feathers was dic- tated by Dame Fashion. ‘ But.men were more ruthless'in their slaughter of all types of birds, including the White Heron, in the Everglades and the Florida Keys. As The Citizen pointed out in an editorial about the wiping out of green turtle in these waters, the estab- lishment of the Everglades National Park will put an end to that slaughter. Oliver Griswold, president of the Key West Audubon Society, pointed out in an interview in The Citizen that the dedica- tion of the park was a “great day” for the wildlife it contains. Back in the days when hunting in areas that are now in.the park was more general than what it is now, hunters had no bag limit and they killed until they were glutted. But things are different now. No-hunting at all is.permitted in the confines of:the park. Common wildlife, as well as rare wildlife, to be found in no other area in the United States, from now on will be protected by federal game wardens. “Rum Running on the Florida Coast and the Bahamas,” a very interesting bro- chure on the rum running days of the ’30’s, and containing other exciting items, came to the notice of this writer recently. It also contained some astounding revela- tions of peculiar interest to the people of Key West. STASSEN’S POSITION Harold Stassen’s tirade against what he calls the Republican President-pickers is in extremely poor taste coming from a man who hopes to be the nominee of that party. He takes the position that the or- ganization is trying to foist a candidate upon the voters who meets the approval of party leaders. In this he attacks a practice which has existed for years, and is the only method by which party integrity can be main- tained. With few exceptions, candidates for President are chosen on their records of Political service. They came up through the ranks. They held important offices such as Governor or United States Sena- tor and are widely known. They have been strictly party men, giving assurance that as President their administrations would be along orthodox party lines. Call this machine politics or something else, Stassen will learn that it is the ap- proved practice, and he will make little progress in his own behalf by running counter to it. ;If it is the party’s decision as arrived at by delegates from the vari- ous states that a.certain man will be the strongest candidate, that man_ will be nominated. ! If either of the men Stassen is now con- demning is nominated, the Minnesota barnstormer will find himself more or less on the outside looking in. Stassen may still be a potential candidate, but he is erecting unnecessary handicaps to his ambitions. Inflation is like the weather; every- body talks about it but nobody does any- thing. DIFFERENCE IN FORM Civilization arrives in areas of Greece, according to a news dispatch, which tells us that strict orders have been issued against the “old custom” of decapitating enemies in warfare. It seems that the “custom” developed more than a hundred years ago when Greeks and Turks displayed the heads of enemies as conclusive proof of military triumph. The practice has been revived by Greek guerrillas against gendarmes and soldiers. The matter is interesting but not more so than the annual killings that occur up- on American highways. Whether one dies by the sword or being hit by a speeding motor yehicle is merely a detail, not par- | ticularly important to the victims. in, wearing White Heron, HE KEY WEST CITIZEN Par st elas Jocal stations change BF ae cue teat fot | .be Included. i Symphony—nbe m Country—cbs urday Sports Review—cbs T¥'Wismer Sports—abe ‘ball Scores—mbs sto >Newg: and Commentary—cbs Jack: Beal Comment—abe Danes Music Band—mbs 7:00—Hawk Larabee Drama—cbs Modern Music Museum—abe Hawaii Calls Musicians—mbs 7:30—Curtain Time Dr: Romance, Love Dra Challenge of Yukon News Broadcast—n 7:45—Lwin News Comment—mbs 8:00—The Lite of Biley—nbe Nighter ‘cbs Dolan, Detectiv = 8:30—Truth or Con: Leave It to 2!
