Distillers, brew- ers, bakers are carrying out pro- ari of curtailed production. Gro- cers are featuring plentiful foods. How. can homemakers contribute food-saving? Once they know the terrible, pressing need, they quick- ly want to know how the whole pro- ‘am set up by the Citizens Food ittee fits into the big job of 1g those millions of bushels of grain, A lot of people have been asking: “How does meatless Tuesday bes to get grain to Europe?” ‘irst you must realize that when you eat meat, you're eating grain. Since three-fourths of all the grain raised in the United States goes into livestock and poultry feeding, that’s where we must turn for most of our grain saving. Usually it takes about five pounds of grain to Produce a pound of meat. And much More than that for the top-grade stuff—the steaks you love to touch, §o it stands to reason, if the home- maker cuts down on meat buying— or serves the cheaper cuts that re- quire less grain—the farmer will send: his livestock to market soon- er, thus shortening the grain-feed- ing period, It may sound like re- How They Stand BASEBALL Key West's Senior Baseball League (Wickers Field) Club— W. Another familiar question? “What about Thursday—doing without eggs? The answer goes something like this. If you skip eggs on Thursday, there will be less demand for this product. At the very heart of all this food- saving is the American home- |i maker, Without her understanding and cooperation, the whole cam- paign bogs down. That’s why the Citizens Food Committee lost no time in setting up a Consumer Sery- ice Section to alert homemakers in ways of conservation. Incidentally, the Consumer Service program, now in full swing, leads to better health and better eating. e+ «s-q Anticipating the homemaker’s problems there’s a daily program of meal-planning information and tips on food saving from the Con- sumer Service Section, headed by Katharine Fisher, who is assisted by well-known home economists and nutritionists. The daily PEACE PLATE builds around a plentiful food, or a meat-egg alternate. The complete menu suggestion rounds out the main dish into a nutritious whole.
