PAGE FOUR” *.” * Se ee a ne ca THE KEY WEST CITIZEN ae enn Chapter 28 jee caught the express ele- vator in the 1501 Broadway building and burst through the door of the Independent Feature News Service. © ‘ There was Red up to his ears in a litter of foolscap, unshaven, tie- Tess, furining héck arid neck down the homestretch ,with his, Muse. Jigger beat his breast: “Red— hoy rat! Why aren’t you serenad- the widow. Herz?” ge yt ed. dipped ‘into «his inside pocket and:threw a letter-at Jig- ger without a word. a Jigger read: Rep: Ivé? got an angel dying to write off sqme_ of his dress-goods profits ong losing Broadway play. Rush any play. Slapstick preferred. Jonathan Tenpercent Doobs. Jigger looked up with a scorn- ful look that preluded the cutting words Judas Iscariot. Red‘ regret- ted: “Sorry, Jigger. It’s the chance of a lifetime for me. Broadway’s burning up. There’s a pile of jack lying around idle and the petit- bourgeoisie’s going around nuts asking astrologers for invéstment eounsel. This dress-goods angel sounds like one and I’m his baby.” digger asked what abdut the case, why not finish onesdrama before you start ‘another, ‘Ibsen? “It’s not a drama, Jigger. I’m doing ,a comedy, that brings the Mack Sennett pie slingers*out of limbo and‘'right back ito the present.” . 3 Jigger:-spread’ his hand over Red’s literary pile. He spoke, try- ing to work himself into a temper about it: “Red, you can’t leg it afte: your Muse now. The whole situation revolves around the widow. I’ve got to corral as much of her correspondence as pos- sible.” Red dipped into the same in- side pocket and dropped three letters in front of Jigger. “Here. I compounded a felony and picked up your mail—or widow’s mail—at your three- dollar-a-month mail service. If these three letters are not what you want, nothing will ever be— even if I pitch a tepee on. East Eighty-fourth Street until the end of my days.” Red tossed the bombshell lightly: “I haven’t seen hide or hair of the widow since day before yesterday. She pow- dered, to coin an expression. Or in Oxonian—if you prefer it, boss —the widow skidooed.” Jigger looked puzzled, then slid a letter-knife under the flaps. Two of the letters were post- marked from a suburban New York town in Orange County. Jigger read them avidly. The con- tents were pifflingly worded notes gushing neighborliness and were signed “Your Friend Emma.” The third letter was a florist’s grand opening announcement. IGGER talked, wrinkling up his face: “Funny that an ‘Emma’ should write from Orange County twice in less than four days—and letters that have to do with such trivial stuff as a square-dance, canning beets and jellies, and the weather in general.” Red said it sure is suspicious and the trivial stuff probably means fifty other things if you could only decode it my friend, without looking up from his copy- reading. : Jigger held the letters alter- nately up to the light. The writing occupied one side, the backs were blank. His face wrinkled some more: “Behind this whole shmear, Red, was a working arrangement to seek out America’s trouble cen- ter. You know—labor struggles, minority dissensions, race erup- tions, ration grousing, and stuff like that. The idea was to inten- sify the trouble through grape- rather, the SOURCE= ' BETTER 48% Key West, | Am Coming Back T 0 You I have been with you for several '"Moons” And I leave now, but not to say adieu, Because I like your friendly ‘“Conchs’” and Key West—I anr coming back to you. Jigger said serious- ly, “This line of psychological attack, Red, doesn’t end with a ‘military armistice. It goes on and on as a post-War ace in the hole no matter how bad the military defeat. That, my boy, is the es- sence of this cause you’ve turned traitor to.” Red said you’re sure a smart feller to have figured all that out, especially since it was as plain as daylight from the day we peeked into Birdie’s valise. _ digger said cut it out menac- ingly. a Red_ looked up to make a final formal exit speech: “Look, guy. Your case is pretty well cleaned up and I have enough faith in you as a pedigreed bloodhound to ex- pect that you’ll wind it up to the President’s taste any minute now. Therefore: I have no compunc- tions at all in retiring to write this three-act passport to a 750- dollar-a-week job in sunny Hol- lywood. Furthermore, my depart- ing friend, I’ve got to get voting status in Hollywood on account of I'm a sinus sufferer with a° New York nose and. my doctor has waved me out there as the only remedy he knows. Now, will you go solve your case and writé me a letter outlining the .denoue- ment?” : :? * Jigger swooped down on the magnum opus, pushed the degk, typewriter, and. all right into Red’s breadbasket, Red fell: over, the chair splintering under. him. Jigger stormed out of the office, showered the girl with the-manu- script pages, and rushed off to see A’hearn.
