We are a little apathetic. to the vari- ous organizations formed in. the United States to promote legislation. While many bf them, like the one mentioned above, sare supposed to represent organizations, ~the weakness in the setup is that, very =often, the top part of the organizations represented do not, in fact, have much influence over their members. L The only effective way to promote universal military service, which we think is an ‘absolute necessity for the safety and security of the United States in the pre- ‘ * S$ent unsettled world, is to advance argu- =ments that appeal to the rank and file “of the American public. It will be neces- v7sary to meet and answer the arguments ~of misguided idealists, who will prate about peace and the ways to get it, and =also dissipate the opinion, widely held in the United States, that we can live in the “world by ourselves without danger of at- tack. “GREAT DAY” LERELT The natives on a Solomons Island re- cently got the idea of a “great day” com- “ing and believed that an American cargo “hip would bring each of them a mosqui- ““to-proof house and a refrigerator. 2 The story comes from Darwin, Aus- tralia, saying that when a British subma- vine arrived off the coast, the natives ‘thought that the time had come to re- -volt. A few star-shells, fired. inte the-veir, . ‘caused the islanders to flee in terror and that ended the “revolution.” The unrest arose, according to the --British ‘Colonial office, from food short- ages which were aggravated by exhaus- tion of wartime rations from U. S. Army dumps. The more they develop the more Key West will be help- ed indirectly. Key West always will be the end of the route, so far as travel by road is concerned, and everybody goes to } the end of the road, particularly when it is known that at the end lies an interest- ing little city. With that attitude understood, The alw: to learn of im- "| HOTT Fa ieee iNHe ae to be made anywhere along the Florida Keys. But, while pleased, The Citizen realizes also that for more improvements along the shore front have been made and are being made at Marathon than at all the other Florida Keys combined. Several times a month The Citizen has published stories about applications made to the corps of army engineers for this district for permits to develop the waterways at Marathon. Breakwaters, wharves, yacht basins and other construc- | tive work have been done, including the deepening of the bay in the vicinity of Marathon, and_ still have been filed, one of which was pub- lished in The Citizen yesterday. As long as two years ago, County Com- missioner W. A. Parrish said, “Watch Ma- rathon grow!” Of course, as he resided there, one could have considered his ex- clamation with, the proverbial grain of salt. But what he said is turning out to be true. Apparently, it will not be long be- fore Key West} will have a sister city only 40 miles away. 7 : Education is: one of the best w lift living standards and promote business. The advertisements that one reads are the advertisements that sell goods and the advertisement seen by the most people is the one that is read most. Need we suggest more? NEGRO APPEAL TO THE U. N. Two-thirds of the people of the earth are black, brown or yellow of skin, de- clares Walter F. White, executive secre- tary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, in con- nection with filing before the United Nu- tions formal charges of widespread dis- crimination against Negroes of the United States in social and economic affairs. We doubt if a majority of Negroes in the United States take so much pride in the effort of their leaders to prefer charges against the United States. As a matter of fact, regardless of the location of the black, brown or yellow people, no part of them has made greater progress than the Negroes of the United States. Nowhere have they the opportunity to en- joy the advantages that are their in this country. The petition, as we understand it, was forwarded to the Commission on Human Rights, which, at the present time, has no power to take action in regard, to such complaints. The idea is that it will formu- late an’ International Bill of Rights and thus, by inference, tell the nations of the earth how they must treat their citizens. If the United Nations, through present or future leadeYship, attempts to right all ‘social, Politicah and economic wyongs in the world, it will be on its way ut. The prime purpose*of the internatiogfil asso- ciation is the promotion of peace and the development of a stable world order in which international commerce Gin be de- veloped to improve standards of living everywhere. Alcohol and motor vehicles make a dangerous combination, but unless juries are ready to convict those who drive while intoxicated there is no remedy in sight. TOBACCO MARKET SLUMPS The meaning of their export market is clear. to all growers of flue-cured tobacco because the price of the weed recently dropped from $1 to $8 a hundred pounds with the announcement that the British eavernmentrhadshagaedingiviaeperts of to- ‘bacco from the United States. Thus, the increasing economic cri in England, which caused the British govern- ment to take such drastic measures, has a direct effect upon the standard of living of the tobacco growers. While the crop for this year has been largely sold, some areas were in the midst of the selling sea- son and suffered heavy losses. In addition, tobacco prices, which have been good, may be drastically reduced next year if ‘the British ban remains in effect.
