“a PAGE FOUR oe een te ee ee . Chapter 14. beg house on One Hundred Eighteenth and Third lay _€@-molding under the El. It was a dowdy. one-story tinder-box plas- tered with circus posters. The windows facing the street were boarded up. The El roared past and the frame dwelling: was a careening prize fighter reaching to throw in the towel. Red chuckled. “Two to one you got a bum steer, Jigger.” “What’ja expect, Red? An open auditorium with a man in front yelling through a megaphone? It stands to reason that Birdie would would be a first-class in- trovert in his choice of residence and location. This place looks de- serted enough to be densely popu- lated with reefer enthusiasts.” “How you going to get in?” Jigger thumbed. “Front door. Failing that, I'll reach the first landing up the fire escape and through that window. The win- dow looks shut, but I can pry like a fiend in an emergency.” Red’s face was lethal. “Count me out, Jigger. I'd hate to be caught in the act of burgling an empty house. It’s too classically futile and would warp my outlook for life.” “You wait out here and watch the cab, Red.” The downstairs door was dou- ble-locked on the inside. Jigger put his shoulder to it until the _blood bulged his cheeks, but the door wouldn’t budge. __ The fire escape grated rust un- derfoot. The first-story windows were happily desolate of panes. Jigger swung a leg inside and ee softly to the floor of the all, There were two doors. Jigger tupped his hand cautiously on the knob of one, turning it gin- gerly. It was locked. It was a simple lock and Jigger fitted his skeleton keys to it. The second one did the trick. ‘ There was a touched-up and enlarged photomaton snapshot in an imitation leather frame, ! It was unmistakably Birdie Nevers under Jigger’s fountain- pen flashlight. Jigger ransacked the bureau drawers. The drawers were main- ly a chaos of wornout shirts, ties, pants, accessories. An abutting closet, doorless, with a velour drape screening it, produced an almost new Gladstone bag. It had weight and was securely locked. Poised for flight Jigger played his searchlight in a final summary inventory. There was nothing else. ‘ A voice in a falsetto pitch squalled through the paper-thin wall. Jigger reined to a_ halt, listening. It was a woman, prob- ably Birdie’s woman, in the front part of the house. IGGER crossed the narrow hall, treading erratically to avoid the loose squeaky floor planks. He deposited the Gladstone in an ob- scure corner of the fire escape, hidden from interior view against the wall, and returned to buck Birdie’s woman. Jigger rapped with genteel re- straint, then nimbly—a beat high- er in tempo—then peremptorily. The door opened and an over- wrought harridan squinted mur- derously at him. “Who are you to be breaking down my door?” Birdie’s woman was big and fleshy with lidless eyes. Her face was a montage of puffs, her chin a wart punctuating cheeks and neckswell. Jigger spoke with sly unction: “I was a dear friend of Birdie’s. I’ve always wanted to meet you.” Birdie’s woman heaved into an immense tenderness. Her hand lumbered toward Jigger, scaling his shoulder. She clamped him into the room, her immensity ripping all over him. “Birdie was’h a good man. Bes’h man!” The saline flood started and stopped. Her eyes wavered across the room into a spotted mirror. : Jigyer deliberated a line of in- terrogation, but could only ‘think of limericks about fat ladies. The rigors of completing a fabric ofl. cane er ee ° — strategies: and deceit that: might elicit: a. lead or. clue: from” this antediluvian soubrette was’a ty- ranny even four grand was no compensation for. Jigger perched | ' one foot on the rung of a straight chair, profoundly silent. ‘ Someone yelled from the bed- room, “Who you talking to, Blossom?” . . The lidless eyes were white. “Mind your: own business.:. I'm talking to a:friend of Birdie who was’h a better man-’n you.” The man in the bedroom yelled, enunciating clearly, each word an exclamation point, “That> cheap punk, Birdie. He was born a bum. He lived a bum. He died a:-bum.” Birdie’s woman became lively. “He was’h a, better man ’n you.” The exclamation points darted horizontally: “Birdie. was.a cheap punk. You could buy him for a nickel. Even:a nickel was over- payin’ him — the way Birdie messed up a job... .” *! Birdie’s woman's. eyes were damp again. “I loved my shweet Birdie. Yer not half the man Birdie~ was’h.” The tears .now loped down her cheeks. : Jigger decided to scram. An- other day, perhaps, when he was girded’ for it, he would prime ; Birdie’s woman for a copious flow of facts. : Birdie’s woman stopped crying and bridled,: “Birdie would ‘be alive if not fer you_turnin’ his head with new ideas. Birdie was’h doin’ fine until you came around.” The man _ in the bedrobm screamed at Birdie’s woman. -His voice hammered the room and the El roared by. again, s% A small.pause, then: “Who did you ~say- you were talking : to, Blossom?”: -- There was -a commotion“ by someone getting out of: bed: and flinging. about the room. getting dressed. % Jigger said with.a wink -that hinted a rendezvous perhaps some day, “I'll scram outa: here. +See you later, huh?” ; Comprehension was. slow.” in Birdie’s .woman, but her’ head | went up-and down. : ATe be continued) | rn a Bae a | | | | | | | | | | | Mrs. Richard H.
