Havana re- ‘Rotie entertainment ches trom? florted highest winds at 40 miles. Two hours before the center of the hurticane struck Dry Tortugas, ‘airplane Ti pilots reported highest winds at 65 miles an hour, yet when the hurricane struck the Tortugas area it blew away, an anemo- meter, and the velocity was mapmated at 150 miles an hour. Probably that estimate is nigh, but the velocity did exceed 100 miles when the anemometer was destroyed.. What made the hurricane gain in intensity in so short a time? The experimenters did not say wheth- er or not they attacked the hurricane with dry ice while on its‘ way from Cuba to the Tortugas. However that may be, the .| wind: not only increased but, ‘terrific thunderstorm developed in the hur- ik¥icane and. spread from Homestead to A fest Palm Beach. But the scientists have admitted that they seeded the hurricane .with dry ice when it was 100 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras and moving northwardly. And what happened? The center disintegrated and another center developed 200 miles to the southwest, but, instead of moving northwardly, its course was changed to- ward the west, causing it to strike Savan- nah and other places in Georgia. No wonder a commission in Georgia has protested to the United:States Weath- er Bureau that the people of Savannah were not given sufficient warning to take precautions against the hurricane. But the Weather Bureau is not to blame be- eause of the “monkey shines” committed by the hurricane. The complaint should be sent to the men who seeded the hurri- cane with dry ice. poder a ia ip to be Mceired are 5 cents a line. he Citizen}is an Sages He nk an as invites eine cussto # and subjects of local o Wut it will not publish anonymous 1947 IMPROVEMENTS, F' ADYOCA KEY BY THE: 9 Fy More Hotels and Apa Beath, and Bathing Pavilior 3. The Key West Citizen, knowing of the wonderful opportunity for service to oth- ers which the Junior Red Cross offers, heartily endorses the membership cam- paign in the local schools, Founded in 1917 by President Wood- row Wilson, the Junior Red Cross has grown to an organization of 19,000,000 members working toward the betterment of their fellows. Its members make gift boxes for dis- tribution to children overseas, favors for patients in the Naval Hospital, as well as provide entertainment for them. Make toys for blind ‘children, and children in the de- vastated areas of Europe, assist in com- munity betterment programs; and serve otherwise. When yoting minds and hands are busy in useful activities, there is little oppor- tunity for them to become in pastimes’ that lead to juvenile delinquency cases: ° This newspaper hopes Key West stu- dents will enroll 100 per cent in the Junior Red Cross, In explaining Junior Red Rross serv- ices, Mrs. N, H. Pepper, chairmban, quot-. ed the JRC “statement of belief:” “We believe in service for others, for our country, our community, and our school, in health of mind and body to fit us for greater service, and for better hu- man relations throughout the world. We have joined the American Junior Red Cross, to help achieve its aims by working together with members everywhere in our own and other lands.” John R. Steelman, chairman of the President’s Scientific Research Board, re- ports that some of the diseases which take a high toll of human life and health are receiving little attention in medical re- search programs. The Board recommends that the geovernment, industry, universities and other private groups increase their . out- lays for medical research, with most of the expansion coming from public funds to supplement, not replace, other active funds. The maladies to which scientific re- search, but the other diseases are not rhumatism, kidneys, influenza and the common cold. They are not receiving the attention that other diseases are getting and there seems to be need for a balanced medical research program. ‘According to report, cancer, venereal diseases and tuberculosis have priority under investigation in Federal medical re- search, but tre other diseases are not equally stressed. Little research is devot- ed to diseases of the heart and arteries, those associated with middle and old age and acute respiratory diseases. Mental diseases and dental diseases, widely pre- valent, have received practically no at- tention. By the time the average politician is ready to lead, the people are several miles ahead.
