WEAVER'S STOCK ISLAND en ee ee In Mid-Atlantic RESCUES MADE WITHOUT| MISHAP; HEAVY SEAS OPEN SEAMS IN BOAT; DECIDE TO DESTROY ‘HER (By ‘The Associated Press) NEW YORK, Oct. 15.—The re- mainder of the 69 crewmen and Passengers aboard the British flying boat, which was forced down yesterday in mid-Atlantic | because of a shortage of fuel,! the } were transferred today to Coast Guard’ cutter Bibb, which is used as a stationary weather ‘ship between Newfoundland and; Treland. Yesterday 44 passengers were rescued, but the rescue work had to be discontinued when darkness came on because of the waves were said to be as high as 35 feet and some gusts had a velocity of 50 miles an hour. i At daybreak today the rescue work was resumed, and the re- maining passengers and the six members of the crew were taken to the Bibb, making a total of 69 taken from the flying boat. Heavy seas that had continued to buffet the boag finally opened her seams, and her owners con- sented this morning to have her destroyed. Great credit was given to the pilot, Charles Martin, for his suc- cessfully bringing down the fly- ing boat in the heavy seas with- out damaging her. He taxied toward the stationary weather ship, but the transfer of passen- gers was deferred for several hours because-of high sea and wind. Assessment On Cut To Thomas M. Curry’s assessment was reduced from $2,600 t> $450 by unanimous vote of the City Commission last night. The assessment was granted over the warning of Tax Assessor Harry Elwood that. if this assesment is lowered,, then other taxpayers will demand thé same treatment, {and are entitle to it. Elwood said he investigated the Curry complaint and did not agree to the extreme reduction. AMAZES FRIENDS Everybody kidded him about his old shabby jalopy.
