SUSTAINED ‘EFFORT ——— “Key West can be almost anything we desire it to be,” Clem C. Price, president of the local Chamber of Commerce, de- clared in his report to the members of that organization. That statement is couched in truth. A city is what its residents make it. Key West, up to the turn of the century, was easy-going because residents wished it to be that way. Since then there have been many movements, designed to promote its progress, but none of them has been sus- tained till recently, and most of them were fitful and died a-borning. Suggestion after suggestion, each of them good, “was made, but before it was well under way, interest in it waned and finally died out: Always, after’ a few months, sometimes a year or so, interest was whipped up in some other proposal, which eventually went the way of all the others. Consider the endeavors in any city with which you are familiar, and if they had been brought to fruition, that goal was attained only by concerted and determin- ed effort. Heretofore, Key Westers have been prone to turn loose a few hurrahs about a proposal, but when the hurrahs ceased, no striking power was left to carry on the proposal to a successful conclusion. “We can do almost anything we de- sire” only if we continue to hammer away to beat down difficulties that may arise and that, sometimes, seem insuperable. That is what St, Petersburg, Miami and other progressive cities in Florida have been doing consistently for many years. And residents of those cities, even though their growth has been rapid, are ever alive to new opportunities, and work just as hard to take advantage of them as they did in the days when those cities were as small or smaller than Key West. Sustained effort and determination are the chief elements in the making of a city as well as an individual. Democracies rarely wage aggressive wars, but you never can tell what dictator regimés will do. re PRESIDENT PASSES THE BUCK “STOP FIRE—SAVE JOBS” Last year, fire destroyed more than a “quarter of a billion dollars worth of fac- tories, plants and stores, and killed hun- dreds of workers. As part of its aggressive work to reduce that toll, the National Board $f Fixe Underwriters has published a 16-page booklet, entitled, “Stop Fire— Save Jobs.”. Copies may be obtained free by writing to the Board at 85 John St., New York 7, N. Y. The booklet is directed at employers and employes, both of whom have a direct personal interest in preventing industrial fires, It covers, in a- simple, step-by-step fashion, what every manager and every worker should know if fire is to be pre- vented—and df the proper action is to be taken when the fire alarm sounds. It deals with a long list of common fire haz- ards, such as smoking, wiring, inflam- mable liquids, rubbish, storage rooms, machinery, static electricity, and so on. It also goes into the principal features of adequate fire protection, including extin- The responsibility for a special session of Congress rests wholly within the dis- cretion of President Truman and there seems. to be_no reason why he should leave a decision in the hands of four Congres- sional committees, expected to meet soon in Washington. The President will not be criticized if he calls a special session of Congress on his own responsibility for the purposes which he has stated, “aiding France and Italy to survive this critical winter as free and independent nations.” At the present time wide differences in public opinion. exist throughout the Nation as to what ought to be done about aid to Western Europe, and other inter- national affairs and preblems. Should such a plant burn, town employment and_ income would drop disastrously — and all other business would feel the blow. Fire has turned once-thriving communities into ghost towns in the past. The National Board’s excellent booklet is designed to prevent that in the future. Economic isolationism is on the in- crease in the United States; it likewise in- creased after World War One. THE COST OF VICTORY The cost of total victory is illustrated by the fact that the taxpayers of the Unit- ed States and Great Britain have spent $916,114,000 to feed the Germans in their zones since the end of the war. Despite the amazing contribution to the welfare of enemy peoples, after defeat, there are signs that the Germans are at- tempting to blame the Allies, alleging that the occupation is “harmful” to Germany and that the victors are not doing all that they could for the Teutons. The burden of victory is one that can- not be overlooked by a civilized power. Naturally, it was not a burden to Hitler when he conquered adjacent peoples be- cause the Nazi leader exhibited little of the rudiments of civilization. He ruthless- ly took what he wanted for Germany and left the populations {> fare as best they could. NAVIES NECESSARY Vice Admiral Sir William George Ten- nant, of the British Navy, visiting in this countfy, says that atomic bomb, or ne atomi¢ bomb, navies will be need as long as supplies are carried by sea. The Admiral organized the Dunkerque evacuation and later commanded the bat- tleship Repulse, which was sunk by the Japanese. He is an experienced seadog and understands some of the functions of sea power, When aircraft carry the bulk of the cargoes of the world, it will be time enough to believe that navies are obsolete. So long as the commerce of peace and (ole aS 5 EE Sh EE aces the supplies of war must move on floating | a2 ships, so long will the nations of the earth maintain navties to contest the su- premacy of the seas. pS cS OT TRE. 5D ERS Er ES Your Horoscope.
