To Ernest Bevin, Pritieh Foreign Secretary, Dear Ernest: Instead of your naive suggestion that Uncle Sam divide the gold at Fort Knox among needy nations, including Great firitain, why not trim down your civil list to skeleton size and do away with *e many drones among royalty, like the Deke and Duchess of Windsor, for in- stance? SEEKING PASSENGERS The rallroads of the United States are fet convinced that passenger trains can- het be operated profitably in the future, @eepite airplane and motor competition, end most of the lines are making strenuous efforts t) secure equipment for licht- weight streamliners. Preight trains have been the financial backbone of the railroad industry but profitable passenger service during the wer hes emphasized the new, fart paseenger trains. A recent review of the situation points out that 551 new passenger cars have been @eliwered already this year and that there ere 2400 passenger cars on order. They will replace some of the heavy equipment new riding the nation’s tracks after twenty-five and thirty-five vears of service. ‘That the ratiroads stand a chance to W'® consiferable passenger traffic through the development of faster and more mod- ore trains ought to be apparent. The qertion of cost is involved, however, when & family decides to take a trip. The same Hecemtiiy that moves the railroads to ask for Higher fares for passengers causes the overage family to use the family car for long journeys SHIPPING FOOD TO EUROPE ht is going to cost tatpayers anywhere the United States het wee 15 billion and 29 billion dollars to grow and send | enough f f to Europe during the next five pears, Highest officials in the Amer- heen government do not expect Russia to help Asa matter of fact Ru of ao & friend, in high government circles in Washing What our top offi ehout Rests i “not fit to print.” cials say ean grow faster than the cooperative spirit among its citizens, Ne emmunit The idea that the workers of the world ore only @ emall segment of the population + OP FON ons ia is not spoken | we were “humbly grateful” that it missed Key West. Not even vegetation was damaged in or the storm of this week. The News neighborliness in publishing that searehead about Key West, and that arrow, point- ing the center of the storm toward Key West, when an advisory, issued before the map was published; said the storm was headed 80 miles west of here. SHIP FIRES V-2 AT SEA The successful firing of a German V-2 jrocket on the aircraft carrier Midway in the Atlantic Ocean recently, may revolu- tionize naval warfare. The Midway, longset and _ heaviest ship in the Navy, fired the 40-foot rocket, weighing more than fourteen tons. Projec- tion of the huge weapon from a moving ship attracts interest because the rockets have an average range of eighty-five miles in vertical flight, which compares with the maximum range of about twenty miles. If it becomes feasible to replace big guns with rocket weapons, it will be pos- sible for a ship at sea to bombard the land area from much greater distances than is possible with guns. The Navy in announcing the experi- importance of | ment, hinted that the rocket blew up af- | pereteding the American public to ride on | ter a flight of only six miles, but explains | that the erratic nature of the weapon ex- plains the result. The hint is given that future rocket experiments might involve the new battleship Kentucky and the battle cruiser Hawaii, both of which have been delayed in construction in order to take advantage of the development of the atomic bomb and rocket experiments. We are perfectly _ willing to forget about the cause of high prices if they will only come down. ONE SENATOR SHOCKED The misrepresentation and untruth be- ing circulated in Europe about the United States shocked Senator Henry Cabot \Lodge, of Massachusetts, who recently visited several European countries for ob- servation. The Senator does not specify any coun- | Sanda against this country but says that | it “comes from people, who, for reasons | j best known to themselves, don’t like the | United States.” The remedy, according to the Senator, | is that the people of the various countries | know the truth about each other. The ef- fort to make available the “truth” about this country to other countries is what lies behind the State Department's program | of radio broadcasts to foreign lands. While it cannot counteract every ru- mor and insinuation about this country, it fean, at least, give foreigners an oppor- | tunity to hear another side of the question (discussed.
