The people | LET RUSSIA HOWL Russia, with her Iron Curtain screwed down tightly, resorts to a blathering joke in accusing the United States of “war- mongering.” Whatever goes on in the United States is open to the world; whatever goes on in Russia is shut out from the eyes of the world, The United States is spending bil- lions of dollars to help needy nations; Russia is’ erinding her satellites under an iron heel. Every nation in the Russian sphere of influence is shuddering with fear of Moseow’s mailed fist. Ruthlessly, Russia is drawing on the resources of her satellites. They are afraid te protest, because it may result in the im- position of sterner measures by Moscow. Vishinsky’s “war-mengering” charges fooled nobody in the United States. This country’s. delegates at the United Nations conference branded the attack as wholly Russian propaganda. It was so fantastic, delegates declared that it probably will not be answered officially. Russia wants to continue to operate be- hind the Iron Curtain and, meanwhile, wants all other nations to disarm them- selves. It is another ease of the queer Russian psychology. That country’s lead- ers think that the more they cry out against the United States, basing their cries on downright lying, the greater will be the build up of sentiment throughout the world against the United States. But the Russian false charges evoke merely a shrug of the shoulder. Except for Russia herself and her satellites, all other countries represented at the conference will support the United States. Vishinsky's denunciation of the United States for continuing to produce atom bombs was merely an implication that this country should weaken her defence while Russia strengthens her own. Let the Russians how] as much as they like; the United States will not reveal the secret of the atomic bomb. It is natural for workers to emphasize a good day’s pay, but in the long run, there must be a good day’s work to round out the bargain. IT CAN’T BE DONE Who’s worried about high prices? You, the consumers, nautrally are. And aren't alone. So are the manufactur- ers who produce the goods you buy. And so are the retailers who sell them to you. Retailing in general has held to a con- sistent policy during postwar price infla- tien. The policy was developed by the chain systems, and thousands of independ- ents of all kinds and sizes have volun- tarily adopted it. It consists of increasing operating economy to the highest possible level, to holding unit profits to the lowest point consistent with sound business prac- tice, and to raising prices only when high- er wholesale prices make it unavoidable. Other innovations are also being used in an attempt to help the hard-pressed consumer. Many food retailers, for in- stance, are offering plainly marked, lower priced meats and are featuring alternate foods for buyers who cannot afford Grade A prices, Merchandisers in other lines are pertorming similar services. A retail association reports that fewer consumers are blaming stores for high prices than in the past. That is a healthy sign, and shows that the public is learning an important lesson. High prices are the result of many causes, some extremely complex, and to lay the blame on any group or organization is unjust. It is es- peelally unfair in the case of retailers, whe cannot control wholesale prices, and must pay the going rate for their stock of goods. Every intelligent retailer would like to slash his prices now—but it can’t be done ) | Automobile drivers should always be alert to youngsters who might happen to get in the streets. ONE REFORM NEEDED . Whether the next session of Congress will produce a tax-reduction measure or not, there seems to be a strong probability that an amendment to existing laws will make the community property principle on individual tax computation applicable to all states. | It should be understood that a number of states allow husbands and wives to di- vide income equally for the purpose of figuring taxes. This lowers the Federal tax burden for many couples in those states and is generally unfair to couples who {cannot do so, THE KEY WEST CiTiZ=D |Alas, A Lack In Emergency, SAN JOSE, Calif. partment reports a bit that is was “seriously handicap- | (ped in handling a typhoid epi-' jdemic, due to lack of sufficient | personnel, lack of an epidemiolo- | gist, lack of adequate transpor- | tation, lack of an adequate pub- j lic health laboratory, and lack of equipment.” 10:30—Ben Alexander Show—mbe 10:45-—-Serials (3% hours)—ebs 11:00—Kate Smith somlerseyn 11:30—Words and Music—n!
