There are oth. er be peti H rune HUMBLY GRATEFUL The only heartening news concerning the hurricane that tore through the south- erly_part of Florida on Wednesday is that no lives were lost. That was a‘ forceful demonstration of the lessons taught the people of the low- er east coast in the hurricanes that struck Miami in 1926 and Palm Beach and the Okeechobee area two years later, when thousands of persons lost their lives. Since then residents in that area of Florida have become hurricane-minded, In the 1926 Mianii hurricane, thotsands of residents were unfamiliar with the move- ments of a hurricane when it strikes a given area. They thought, when the cen- ter was passing over Miami, that it was the | end of the hurricane. Thousands rushed out of their homes and were caught in the heavier winds coming from an opposite quarter. It was during the second onset that most fatalities oceutréd in the Miami area. Residents on the east coast know now what the people of Key West have known for many years, a8 a result of which the loss of life here has been almost nil. In the 1919 hurricane, a matt lost his lite while trying to reach his boat, in the hatbor off the foot of Caroline street, to ruin ott an- ohter anchor from her. Key West has been fortunate since then, and has been grateful for that good fortune, Residents are aware that nobody knows what coutse a hurricane will take, and it is as likely to come in this difeetion as elsetvhere along the east or west coasts of the state. Knowing that to he so, we are humbly grateful that Wednésdiy’s hurti- eane traveled two degtees north of our latitude before it began to turn westward- ly. TEACHERS GETTING MORE PAY News from all over the country shows that the State and local school boards have raised the pay for school teachers. Chieago showed that its heart is in the right place and assured $1,800,000 pay in- creases for its teachers. The Ilinois legis- lature backed the increases. Our schools and education are recog- nized as the foundations on which Amer- iean citizenship is built. That is why the smaller cities, towns, and country districts are in line looking after their school teach- ers, who will be paid enough to meet the high costs of living. And wity not? Workers at the bottom of coal mines as well as airplane pilots who fly the biue skies, are getting double what they were before the war. The reorganization of our social and economic 'ife is‘one of the crying needs of the day. NEWSPAPER LIBEL In a new suit on newspaper libel, styled Cooper Against The Miami Herald, and reported in 31 Southern second series, page 382, the Florida Supreme Court de- cided the Miami Herald was not guilty of libel for publishing that a eertain charac- ter shot “at” a certain night spot. The place and position of an article, and the display of headline, may be considered in determining the libellous nature of an ar- ticle. The court said that the actual language of the matter published must be the only thing considered in determining whether publishing matter is libel per se, as innuen- dos are only deductions of the party com- Plaining. The situation in India makes us won- der who’s exploiting them now, since the British left. PARITY PRICES Farm supports are determined by the government on the basis of shifting prices. Parity prices are pfices that fatmers receive in relation to prices that farmers pay. A rising price level means a rising purity price for farm crops. For instance, a year ago wheat was worth $1.79 a bushel. Now, it is worth $2.08 a bushel. Cotton has gone up nearly 5 cents a poutid. The government admits that it “gets caught by inflation.” Farm prices are guaranteed govern- ment support through 1948.
