Probably the answer is the rotation of the earth. Or, for all we know of a definite nature, the smashing of the atem of hydro- gen may be the propelling force. Whatever it is, we are stumped as we j try to figure out how winds, revolving about a calm center, maintain a velocity of more than 100 miles an hour, day in and day out, for as long as 10 days at a time. The terrible hurricane that was first reported at 4:15 Thursday morning of last week, gained gradually in intensity till a velocity of 140 miles was reported. Whether or not that was so, we know that the earliest report put the velocity as “near hurricane force,” but by Thursday after- noon winds had passed the hurricane minimum of 75 miles an hour. Twenty- four hours later, a report placed the high- est velocity at 140 miles. A poet says something about our “round, beautiful world,” but only at times is it “beautiful” in some parts, for it is al- ways “ugly” in some of its areas, with an estimated 6,000 thunderstorms going on all the time, or terrific winds blowing all the time in some quarter of the globe. For. sustained force, the hurricane is the worst of the winds. While the giant, which crossed Key West’s latitude Sunday afternoon, was roaring toward the middle Florida coast, two typhoons were reported in the vicinity of Japan. A typhoon is an- { other name for a hurricane. Considering that Nature is always riot- ing somewhere in the world, we would say that it is not so “beautiful.” A good lawyer advises his clients to stay out of lawsuits, According to the Armistice Treaty, Rumania has to pay Russia $300 million reparations in 8 years, and in goods at pre-war prices. That’s the way Russia treats her satellites. Rumania doesn’t like the treatment, but what can she do? She has no choice. NO DEFENSE, SAY SCIENTISTS The Federation of American Scientists recently issued a statement on the second anniversary of V-J Day, declaring that “there is no adequate defense against atomic, bombs” and that “national secur- ity lies in world security and that can be attained only by international action.” The Federation says that it is danger- ous to conclude, even by implication, that a strong science can produce security. It points out that many citizens have justi- fied support of science for its war poten- tial but the Federation says that “national security cannot result from military pre- paredness or the.support of science for its war potential.” Declaring that the nation must not “substitute national half-measures for the goal of international cooperation,” the Federation statement insists that “true national security means that the nation and its people are secure against the loss of their lives, their liberties and their prop- erty.” In the past, says the statement, the na- tion attained a measure’ of | secutity by armed might but that the atomic bomb and other methods of modern warfare have destroyed this possibility. “We do not have security if, at the same time we destroy our enemies they destroy us.” This is the conclusion of a group of prom- inent scientists. If you want to keep in touch with a friend, borrow some of his money. Of interest to property owners: Cam- bridge, Mass., has reduced its property tax rate again for the sixth consecutive time. TO END GREEN BOWL CLUB “There is no place in the Navy for any secret society,” declares Rear Admiral Frank J. Lowry, who is expected to file his report on an investigation into alleged activities of the Green Bowl. { The Green Bowl, it is alleged, is a se- society, devoted to help its members climb the professional ladder in the Navy. Admiral Lowry apparently does not think that the organization is a secret, self-help club and recommends that it be dissolved. The investigation started when Cap- tain John G. Vrommelin, ene of a group of brothers who made history in the Navy, testified that the Bowl, which was “inne- cently started,” had “grown vicious with the years.” THE-KEY WEST Ci Radio ak Fae Selected programe as listed below are broadcast at the same day through Friday.
