Pack TWO Wiest Citizen 2 «.3i = ine ond Ane om oor Sareea.” = “m ————— cared at Kay West, Florida, ae seeond clase matter Se nee ——— en ut. ine the beet pudliahed (2P LSet ok SSR. Sect! 5.8; 28 GaeA ° *eee MONOGRAPH To Members of the Jewish Faith: fear Friends: wanan Aste nsw? Sincerely, THE ORACLE. WHAT MADE U S. LIVING STANDARD? Wieh wages for labor are obviously desirable. But the failure of a large seg- ment of taber te do a day's work commen- eerete with present reeord earnings is one ot the mest dangerous of today’s problems, eed & ae important contributory factor in price teflation and the deterioration of the wullet The president of the Portland, Ore- goon, Chamber of Commerce, recently eted the case of bricklayers who, in the late twenties, would lay from 1,500 to 2.000 bricks « day. Now output is consid- ered geod if a man lays 500, and most contractors estimate 300 when preparing tide. At the same time, bricklayer's wage hee pleen te 824 a day.. However, if pro- duction & taken into account, the brick- layer’s way compared with the twen- works out to something like $120 a the day ‘ The building trades may an ex- treme example of cost-boosting. But al- feet every major industry has reported men-hour output has gone down even weges have risen time and time again. And thie le one reason why prices for com- @redities have gone up ax fast and, in many chews, faster than wages. A® eeonomiet for a major labor union recently said this: “The whole history of Amertea’s industrial growth has demon- etreted that we were able to obtain a high- tandard of living than any other na- toe by pregressively raising wages in re- tattcm pric . Tt was made possible ty constant improvement in our a predwee more goods and services in less time through better machines, better man- emement ant improved efficiency of the workers.” It is to be hoped that American lohow will listen to its own experts. SEEtT*erce _--_———. Selfish schemers are sure to convince idealists that it is best to be practical, The devil is much amused by some of the je that go on in the name of re. _—_—— The average man is willing to do al- Mort anything to make money except good hard work ndhi continues his an- nounced fast until there is peace in India, the Indian leader hasn't long to live. It seems foolish to sacrifice his life when he could be of great help to his country at a time when it is most needed, a “CONFUSE AND GRAB” “Confuse and grab’”—that is the Rus- sian policy, declares the Rev. Ted Temo- schchuk, pastor of the Lake Worth Baptist Church, who is of Russian descent and is familiar with Russian psychology. Peter the Great, the pastor added; in- stituted the Russian ‘“confuse-and-grab” policy, and it was adopted by Lenin,. and is adhered to strictly by Statin. Russian spies are at work in the United States, the pastor said, fomenting or trying to foment strikes, because strikes cause eonfusion, which, in turn, has a weakening economic effect on this country. Because of that inborn Russian trait, he predicted that another war will engulf the world in the next five years. That assertion is purely a guess, Oth- ers have said it,,and some have placed the time at 16 and other numbers of years. Nobody knows, if another war comes, when the time will be. But that “confuse and grab” condi- tion is applicable to every calling in life. A business man, if he beeomes confused, is almost sure to be adversely affected. Stepping from business to sports, any ath- | lete who allows himself to become con- fused reduces his efficiency to a minimum. How many games of baseball have been lost because of the confusion of one or more players? Go to the golf links, and you see a man playing steadily until one poor shot upsets him, and tensing his nerves, to try to overcome his tendency to slice or hook, or some other fault that has cropped up in his playing, he becomes so confused his game “is shot to pieces,” as the men on the links say. Back to the Russians. They will learn. probably to their mortification, that their policy of “confuse and grab” will fall flat in the United States, The nations of the world vary consid- erably in their customs; there are places where young men and women appear in public only when ehaperoned. INDEPENDENT MERCHANDISING The National Association of Retait Grocers has made a_survey of the reeent operating experience of independent gre- cery stores throughout the country, in towns ranking from little villages up to and ineluding New York City. It found that an overwhelming major- ity of the independents enjoyed better business during the first half of 1947 than in the same period of 1946. Asked as to their opinion of future prospects, 87 per cent of the operators felt that business would be good, and only 7 per cent feared a serious decline. What makes this survey particularly interesting is that not so many years ago the virtual demise of the independent merchant was widely forecast—due to the competition of the chain systems. A num- ber of states passed restrictive chain store tax laws of one kind or'another, and a na- tional measure was aggressively pushed in Congress, but never passed. Many a pessimist was firmly convineed that inde- pendent merchandising, in all basie lines, was a fast-dying enterprise. The experience of the following years has shown how wrong the harbingers of disaster were. Independent merchandising accepted chain competition on its own grounds, and met it. Competition, instead of destroying one kind of retailing, simply forced all retailing to better its service, to improve its stock, and to watch its prices —to the enormous benefit of the consum- ing population. The progressive merchant who knew his business, whether he ran his own store or a chain outlet, prospered accordingly. In this, as in all other fields of business, free enterprise again proved its soundness. It is just possible that the general pub- lic will have to be protected against labor and capital. NEW LABOR LAW MUST BE OBEYED Labor bosses still order the honest American workers to strike and tie up in- dustrial and business institutions, in de- fiance of the new Labor Law. How can any sensible person become a party to efforts to break down this Fed- eral law? It was passed twice by Con- gress, by more than two-thirds majorities in the Senate and House—over President Truman's vetoes. If that law is ng. every law on the books is questionable. Besides, if the law is to be ehallenged for its con- stitutionality or any other reason, the higher courts—and the Supreme Court— \ will have to deeide the issue. THE KEY WEST CiTIZEn | . .
