MONOGRAPH To Thé Curious: A woman in Miami, who fears being “rubbed out’ by gangsters, made three attempts to destroy herself. Since she seems determined to leave this mundahe sphere abruptly, and failed in her ef- forts, why doesi’t she let the gangsters do the ganvé thorough job on her as they did on het boy. friend? THE ORACLE. TRUTH OFTEN OPPOSED It is worthy. of note that when Edward ; Jenner performed his.first public vaccina- tion against smallpox in 1896; he was ridi- | “euled and bitterly opposed by many of the so-called leaders of his day, including some medical men. The same peculiar phenonemon was exhibited when Pasteur advocated the ex- clusion of bacteria from wounds and at | childbirth. é It is one of the strangest manifesta- “tions of human ignorance that the men who have made great discoveries in the realms of science and in abstract thinking have usually béen’ denounced, ridiculed and of- ten executed by the responsible “leaders” of their day. Unfortunately, in many: in- stances, religious leaders participated in the persecution, i It is all right for us to look back a hun- dred yeats or-.more and” wonder at the strange behavior of so-called intelligent men and women. We marvel at the oppo- sition manifested against the promulgation of truth in the realm of thought and in _the sciences and take it for granted that we improved a bit: That is a violent assumption because ~the chances are, if some wise individual comes forth with new truth, he will be de- nounced and persecuted by the ignorant “and superstitious today, just as similar men . Were persecuted in the years that are past. Very few of us realize what we owe “= to the intrepid courage of brave men some years ago. It is the part of wisdom to un- _ derstand our indebtedness and to appre- ciate our heritage. Finishing one’s work on time is one + of*thé best ways in the world to enjoy your work. s SEs REE ence Too many people waste too much ~ time trying to tell other people what to do ~ and how to think. yee There are some people who think that what this eountry really needs is some * workers who are willing to do a day’s work for a day’s pay. ee Many citizens who declare they are “too busy” to take an active part in the work of their church, spend much time criticizing those who do their part. assOvLA’ CT to {e exclusively en: tot aa ACTING PROMPTLY Procrastination is almost second nature with some people. Many wait till the last minute to do something, regardless of how long a previous time they might have had | to do it, but others, and their numbers are | not few, almost invariably ‘run over the deadline. “This year, as was announced in The Citizen on Tuesday, a change goes into ef- fect in the purchasing of drivers’ licenses. If a license is bought by October 1, the amount is only $1 for the owner of a -pri- vate car, After October 1, the sum becomes $2, besides the chance of a delinquent run- | ning the risk of being arrested. You may feel confident that, regardless of the publicity that is given the new law, many Key Westers will wait till after Oc- tober 1 to buy licenses, and pay twice as [meel- : Some few, as the county tax assessor will tell you, even wait till too late to ob- tain homestead exemptions, and then must pay the full tax, which may run as high as 19 times as much as the homestead tax would have been. . Procrastination applies in. many other ways to the loss of those persoys who make it a practice of putting off, day after day, something that should be done today. Consider the payment of ad valorem taxes. Four per cent discount_is given the property owner who pays his taxes during November. Persons who adhere to the rule to do now what should be done now save that four per cent, but many do not even take advantage of the reduced percentages that run up to February. Generally, they wait till March, when they have~te pay the full amount, and some wait till their properties become delinquent before mak- ing payment. : As a rule, it is the man _ who acts promptly who succeeds in life. Old-fashioned horsehair furniture, we are told, counted on the cooperation of horses. There are people, of whom other's say, that they never give a thought to anything but what they can get for themselves. There is one thing to be said about the merchant who does not advertise: He sel- dom worries the merchants’ who do ad- Vertise. THE MONROE DOCTRINE The Monroe Doctrine, asserted “as a principle in which the rights and principles of the United States are involved@hat the American continents, by the free and in- dependent condition which they have as- sumed and maintained, are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European power.” Nevertheless, European influences have upset)many pafts of Latin America. There is danger from foreign settlements in Paraguay. There is continued uneasiness over Argentina, which has peculiar notions that her Germans and other immigrants will become the dictators south of the Panama Canal. So the United States would do well to pay more attention to its own door yards. At the same time it is quite clear in Wash- ington that the United States government would be happy to part company with Russia, if the separation could be made on any kind of safe basis that would bring about absolute divoree, without war. It’s still a good world, for pity, mercy, and loving kindness have not yet’ perished from the earth—not yet. The idea that a lawyer beeomes some- thing of a paragon when he ascends to the judicial bench is one of the things that no- body believes. BUYS OUR GOODS WITH OUR MONEY Foveign trade in the cryptic language of the United States Department of Com- merce, reports—but pipes down on ex- plaining—that the United States sent. $5,- 340,000,000 more in goods and services to Europe than Europe sent to us last year. The Department of—Commerce says that “this tremendous surplus was compensated for through American gifts to Europe in the net amount of $2,130,000,000, Amer- ican loans in the net of $2,716,000,000 and the liquidation of $580,000,000 of Euro- pean gold and dollar assets.” Hang on to your hat! The Department observes that eventually the United States exports would have to-drop to a “level equal to our im- tports.” When is eventually? THE KEY WEST CITIZEN Submarines Off To Cuba « USS.
