This is -an interésteing case because it indicates that the Government, when it can establish the fact, will prosecute bus- iness men for the violation of laws. The man convicted is thus branded as a crim- inal. By the violation of his country’s laws, he places himself in the same cate- gory with thieves, footpads and robbers. There have been repeated rumors and reports of individuals violating the war- time regulations of the Government. That this is true can be readily perceived by the activities of the black market in the hand- ling of various commodities. Unfortunate- ly, it will not be possible to work up the evidence against all those who violated their country’s laws, during the war years, for the sake of making illegal profits. We dd not hesitate to condemn those who participated in these illegal activi- ties. While their fellow-countrymen fought the enemy, at the risk of life itself, these weasel-like Americans displayed their peculiar brand of loyalty by attempting to violate essential and necessary regulations. DREAMS ARE DANGEROUS Not many residence of Monroe Coun- ty have a father eighty-two-years-old, but just in case, we warn them against letting the old man carry a pistol. . The warning is timely in view of the recent incident in Illinois, where a forty- six-year-old woman was shot to death on a passenger plane and her eighty-two-year- old father explained to police that he fired his pistol after dreaming about train rob- bers, The old man, it seers, was carrying about $500 in his pocket and was asleep. He dreamed about tobbers. woke up and “thought someone was trying to rob” him. He pulled his gun and fited and his daugh- ter, setting in an adjoining seat, fell to the floor, fatally wounded, ——— ; The Bible still outsells any book pub- lished and, if you want to know, is still be- ing widely read. a Ss RL ee ee One of the Worst things that ean hap- pen to an individual is to be always on the lookout for the worst things to happen, Terminal leave bonds will be cash- able after September 1, 1947. Here is good advice from President Truman for GIs to tollow: “f{, on the other hand, veterans choose the wise course, hold their bonds and continue to draw 21% percent interest. i their dollars will buy more when they cash their bonds after inflationary conditions have ended. I urge veterans not to cash their ponds unless they are in urgent need of the money now.” 4 How urgent is your need, GI? All of us, whether we stayed at home or fought | in foreign lands, often, under a passing thought, think we need this or that. But if we weigh the supposed urgency, calmly and reasonably, we frankly convince our- selves that we really can do without some- thing that we think we need. That deci- sion also saves us money in the upkeep of what we think we need, and, in the long run, fattens the pocketbook. Too often we buy something because we tiink it is cheap. We find it hard to resist what we consider a bargain. But bear in mind what Benjamin Franklin said about a group of men and women at an auction, who bought many things that they did not need because they were cheap: “Nothing is cheap at any price if you don’t need it.” Key West GIs who have terminal | Jeave bonds need only to make a few in- quiries among neighbors to learn that many Key Westers are remorseful today because, when they were earning fat sal- aries, they cashed their Series E Bonds im- mediately after the 60-day holding period. Today the bonds and the money also are gone. Hold your terminal leave bonds un- less, as President Truman said, you are | really in urgent need of money. Florida must retain 6,500 to 7,000 Ba- haman and Jamaican farm laborers for the duration of the season’s crop if we are to avert a serious labor shortage this fall and winter, according to the Florida Vegetable Committee. UNJUST, SAYS EVATT “It would be unjust if Japan’s popu- lation attains privileges and benefits de- nied the countries which she devastated”, asserts Dr. Herbert Evatt, Australian Min- ister for External Affairs, who suggests that the gradual economic development of Japan be a part of a general plan for the economic betterment of East and South- cast Asia and the Pacific as a Whole. The Australian suggests a post-treaty supervisory allied control commission, which would, among other duties, coordin- ate Japanese economy with those of Pa- cif ce and East Asiatie regions. He does not believe that Japan’s postwar economy should be viewed in terms of a level com- parable to that of years prior to the war. He expresses the view that it should be ad- justed to the level of other Pacific nations. There is considerable logic in uthe position taken by Dr. Evatt, who does not think that the future economic progress of Japan should be delineated by the needs and possibilities of that country alone. He takes the view that the aggressor in the Far East inflicted great losses upon other people, in addition to the sacrifices made by them in the struggle against the aggressors and concludes that there is no justice whatever in permitting the Japan- ese to become “top dogs” in the economics of the Far East. Official dedication ceremonies for Florida Everglades National Park by Pres- ident - Truman are scheduled for December 5 to 15. The gala event will receive na | tionwide publicity. * ‘ WHAT ABOUT YOUR FOOD Men and women have been eating for thousands of years but not until compar- atively recent times has there been any | real scientific study of foods.
