Be wise, Ad- vertise, THE ORACLE. LS CS FREEDOM IN INDIA Inasmuch as we have not reported on the situation in India for some days, it might be well to chéck up on the incidents of violenee in that unhappy land now “en- joying” their “independence.” Ome day recently, thirteen persons including three women and. two" children, were killed op the.outskirts of Amritsar, holy city of the Sikhs, in Punjab Province. On the same day, police were strengthen- ing their outposts in Bombay after a re- newal of communal violence, featured by the explosion of a bomb in a theatre, kill- ing three persons and injuring seventy, At Baremala, Moslems attempted to mob the car of Mohandas Gandhj, smash- ing a window without- injuring the Indian leader, who continued his journey. This is one day's crop of the news in India, Naturally, many incidents are not carried on the cables from India to the United States but, it seems, the people of India are beginning to enjoy their free- dom from British control, sae seen eeenen (From Sanford Herald) We have had several inquires lately as to why the narrow’ sheet which has been appear- ing lately in our. paper. We ordinarily use a 35” roll, 52%” roll and a 70” roll for our four, six and eight page papers respectively. But due to the newsprint shortage, we are:not always able to ob- tain the exact size which we want, and have to use what we can get. When we have four pages with a three column fly sheet in the middle we are using a 43” roll. When we have eight pages with two of them narrower than the others, we are using a 64” roll. When we have six pages with two of them pink, we. are using two rolls, one of them a 34” roll (white) and one an 18” roll (pink). This is the most difficult operation of all and required considerable inventive genius on the part of our foreman. A recent questionaire in England in- vited people to send in dream menus, which they would order and eat if they could have anything they wanted. Roast chicken, of all things in Dear Old Eng- land, won by a neck from roast beef, which is largely legendary now. — California motorists repeatedly involv- ed in accidents are classified as “negligent drivers,” and @ néw law defines a negij- gent drivers @s one convicted of aceident liability four or more times in 12 months, six or more times in two years, or eight or more times in three years. © : A reporter for the Christian Science Monitor tells of three Chinese who worked for six years in Cuba under the protec- EMOTIONALIZED MORONS Let everbody believe as he wishes in worshipping God, That is the creed of the tolerant man. He realizes that beliefs are based on faith, for one man knows as much, which is nothing of a definite nature, about God as does the other man. But beliefs or faiths can be carried too far. We had witcheraft in this coun- try in the early days of the Pilgrims, and it took a long time to stamp it out, Were such a thing attempted today, the law _| would step in to stop it. We deplore the acts of savages in making human sacrifices to appease God, but we have outbreaks of so-called relig- ious fervor in the United States even to this day. But ‘the law promptly says, “Thou shalt not”, as happened in Wise, Virginia, a few days ago, where “faith healers” used rattlesnakes in the services and permitted members to be bitten to demonstrate their “faithfulness”. The bitten, on several oc- casions, during the last year or so, have died in agony. Ris The first thing Wise should do is to change its name, because it is a misnomer. Any normal human being realies that God does not require human sacrifices, whether by fire or snake-bite, to appease Him or to show faith in Him. But morons, and they are numerous in the United States, are easily stirred emotionally, and in that state they are deprived of the power of reasoning soundly and are likely to do anything that would cause a feeling of horror in a normal mind. So police in Wise locked up zealots for practising snake rites. We must pro- tect our emotionalized morons. YOU CAN EXCUSE THE CHINAMEN tion of the United States, earning a com- paratively fabulous American salary. When asked if they had ever heard of democracy, they looked blank. He then asked them whether they had ever heard of Communism, They answered enthusi- astically in the affirmative. “Furthermore” the reporter said, “they all thought they would prefer living under the Communists in northern China on their return home. They have read about Communism, but never have, heard or read about the demo- cratic way of life under which they are living so happily. Like the rest of us, they take for granted American democracy.” The government of the United States has functioned through the years for one purpose—to protect the dignity and free- dom of its citizens. Individual initiative endeavor built the economy which makes this type of government possible and keeps it operating effectively. Yet, in the last decade and a half, there has been a clear trend in the direction of government. own- ership of industry — Communism. Two billion dollars have been spent to establish government in the business of generating and distributing electric power alone, in tax-exempt competition with the investor- owned tax-paying electric industry. A great hydro-electric system is proposed for the Missouri and Mi sissippi rivers, with no mention of its effect on existing private utilities in the two valleys.
