And Keath- Makes Dough From Pies BAKER KEATHLEY ley—a young fellow with two children—had only $3.50 be- sides his rent money. He was sitting there eating when he got to thinking about the little muffin-ring pie his | wife had made for him. She pui them in his every day. The foreman had tasted one, and liked it. So had other fellows at the plant. What this country needs, Keathly mused, is a good five- cent pie. There wasn’t a nickel pie in Memphis. The first day a neighbor- hood cafe and a grocery store sold 16 dozen pies. For a while he carried pies _in a basket to the stores and cafes he could reach afoot. They moved to another house with six rooms—four for the fam- ily, two for the pies. It was about a vear before they rented a commercial building—a narrow little store which is now a part of holdings that include two dairies, five farms, an orchard, a cafeteria, - @ grocery, four bakeries ‘and an “ice cream store. But even with the volume of business rising there were weeks when the rent money and operat- ing costs left them with a loss. During the first vear they were in ._..the little store, Keathley says, he got up at three o’clock of a morn- ing, baked pies and pastry until nine. Then ran a route of about one hundred customers until three in the afternoon. He went back to the ship then and made pies until nine o’clock. Today the annual gross is one million dollars. Some 20,- 000 small pies are sold daily in half the states of the Union. Keathley, a deacon in a Mem- phis Baptist church, attributes his success to his “Silent Partner’ and his practice of tithing. But Memphis is right back where it started as far as nickel | pies are concerned. Keathley’s have gone up to a dime. : Warning System For Bad Checks ro VALLEJO, Caljf—(AP).—The’ bounce of a bad check reaches the ears of 52 Vallejo merchants in quick order under a coopera- tive warning project of ‘the local Credit Granters Club.
